Definition of Stress

Definition of Stress

Stress is the relative emphasis or prominence given to a certain syllable in a word (word stress) or to a certain word in a sentence (sentence stress). A stressed syllable is pronounced with greater force, higher pitch, and longer duration than unstressed syllables.

In phonetic transcription, stress is marked by a superscript vertical line /ˈ/ before the stressed syllable, and a lower vertical line /ˌ/ for secondary stress.

Example:

record (noun) → /ˈrek.ɔːd/ (stress on first syllable)

record (verb) → /rɪˈkɔːd/ (stress on second syllable)
