GT IELTS Informal letter

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Your high school friend who has moved to another country will be visiting your country for a month. You have arranged a party for him/her.

Write a letter to this friend. In your letter,

·         give the date and location of the party

·         say who are coming to the party

·         and mention things that he/she has missed during his/her stay in another country

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Model Answer 1:

Dear Kyle,

I'm so glad to hear that you're coming to visit us after such a long time. Of course, I know that you like your new, “adopted” country, but I think that you would still be interested to know what you've missed after leaving our country.

Well, our only football stadium in the city has been made bigger to accommodate more spectators. Besides, Eric, who we all used to make fun of as a “political geek”, has started his new political career as a city council member.

Now comes the most fun and exciting part of this letter. In fact, we are planning to throw a “welcome” party to make your visit a special and memorable one. It's not only going to be attended by most of our high school and college friends but also by some of our favourite high school teachers who had helped us become better students.

By the way, the party will be held on the 4th of July, and the venue is “Memorial hotel” on Traverse street, right across the town. So, hope to see you there!

Best wishes,

Justine

Model Answer 2:

Dear Leena,

I'm so excited to learn from your letter that you'll visit your home country after at least eight years! Time indeed flies! We've planned to make your trip memorable by arranging a "welcome" party for you, and we are looking forward to your arrival and enjoying our time together.

As for the date and location of the party, we've decided to throw the party on 4th August, three days after your arrival, in the large backyard of Mike's house. We'll start gathering at Mike's place just after the evening and the party is expected to continue till midnight.

At least twenty of our high school friends and a few buddies from our neighbourhood are expected to join the party. We've also invited a few of your relatives including your parents and siblings. It is going to be a blast!

During the eight years of your stay in Canada, many things have happened. Our high school has won the district football championship for the first time last year and we have got a new councillor in our city. Moreover, Natasha, Selina and Tania have moved to the UK, and Natasha is expecting a baby soon. Perhaps most interestingly, Sam, who had always been against doing a job has become a junior partner in a local law firm.

We're very much looking forward to your visit.

Have a safe journey.

Warm wishes,

Rebecca

·         tell them why you think this person would be good to go with

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear .........................,

Model Answer:

Dear Mike,

Hope all is well on your end. I know that you're going to get a bit disappointed, but the truth is I don’t think that I'll be able to go to the theatre with you next Saturday evening. Let me just explain to you why I needed to change my plan.

Actually, my boss is returning from Japan in the evening, on that day, and he has requested me to pick him up from the airport and head straight to the office to have an urgent meeting with me and the others. I don’t know exactly how long the meeting is going to last, but given the urgency of the meeting, I don’t think that it would end soon – soon enough to allow me to join you at the theatre on time.

So, I guess, it is better if I just give the ticket to my cousin, Eric, so that he can go with you. By the way, you already have met Eric, and you should enjoy his company because he doesn’t just have a bubbly personality, but also are into the same kind of classic movies as we are!

Please let me know your thought about it. Take care.

Warm wishes,

Mathew

·         explain why you are organising the party

·         describe what you are planning to do

·         say why you want your friend to come to the party

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................,

Model Answer:

Dear Carl,

Hope all is well at your end with you and your family. I know that you don’t really like to attend any kind of party, but I still took the liberty to invite you to one since it's going to involve mostly the family members of my extended family. After all, I'm well aware of the fact that you don’t really feel comfortable being around strangers.

Oh, in case you are wondering, my family has decided to organize this party in order to congratulate my youngest uncle who recently has received his license to practice medicine after struggling for almost two years! This party is going to be more like a casual party, it won’t include too many things except enjoying some freshly-made dinner, and light music, which were especially enjoyed by my uncle when he still was a student.

The party is going to be held on 23rd August, this month, and I'd very much like you to join it since this is going to allow you an opportunity to recuperate from the boredom of some tough engineering lessons and mid-term examinations.

Warm regards,

Mario

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter,

·         say what else you liked about this visit

·         ask your friend to meet you someday at a restaurant

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear .................,

Model Answer:

Dear Fanny,

Hope all is well at your end. I'd like to thank you for the wonderful meal that I enjoyed at your home with your entire family last week. The food, you served, was just so great and delicious. In fact, the pizza at your home was the best homemade pizza I've ever tried!

I also very much enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere at your home and liked the idea that you introduced your entire family to me one by one right after arriving at your place. Besides, I enjoyed your family videos from the past, especially, when you were a little child. On top of that, the location of your home is excellent as it has plenty of space around it. Finally, the small but very beautifully maintained orchard garden at the back of your home was breathtaking.

But, anyway, now that you've been kind enough to invite me to your home for a great meal, I would also like to invite you to a favourite restaurant of mine for some dinner this coming weekend.

Hope you would come.

Warm wishes,

Miller
