NEB grade 12 Compulsory English Frequency adverbs (always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never)

Frequency adverbs (always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never):

Frequency adverbs describe how often something happens. They are placed differently in a sentence depending on the tense, subject, and context.

1. Always

  • Meaning: 100% of the time; without exception.
  • Position: Usually placed before the main verb, except when the verb is "to be," in which case it comes after.
  • Examples:
    • I always go for a run in the morning.
    • She is always happy when she sees her friends.

2. Usually

  • Meaning: Most of the time; nearly always.
  • Position: Typically placed before the main verb.
  • Examples:
    • I usually have tea for breakfast.
    • They usually visit their grandparents on Sundays.

3. Often

  • Meaning: Frequently; many times.
  • Position: Placed before the main verb.
  • Examples:
    • I often read books before bed.
    • She often goes to the gym after work.

4. Sometimes

  • Meaning: Occasionally; not all the time.
  • Position: Placed before the main verb.
  • Examples:
    • I sometimes take naps in the afternoon.
    • He sometimes goes for a walk in the park.

5. Rarely

  • Meaning: Not often; seldom.
  • Position: Placed before the main verb.
  • Examples:
    • I rarely eat fast food.
    • We rarely watch TV during the week.

6. Never

  • Meaning: 0% of the time; not at all.
  • Position: Placed before the main verb.
  • Examples:
    • I never drink soda.
    • She never goes to bed late.

General Rules for Placement:

1.      Before the main verb: This is the most common placement for frequency adverbs.

o    Example: She often goes swimming in the evening.

2.      After the verb "to be": When the verb is "to be," the adverb is placed after it.

o    Example: He is always on time.

3.      Before modal verbs (e.g., can, should, will, etc.): Frequency adverbs come before modal verbs.

o    Example: They always can find the solution.

Order of frequency adverbs (when used with multiple adverbs):

  • Adverbs of frequency generally come before other adverbs like manner, place, and time.
