Part 2: Describe a memorable journey you had

One of the most memorable journeys I had was a trip to Pokhara, a beautiful city in Nepal. It was about two years ago, during the Tihar festival, when I decided to take a short break from my routine. I went with my family—my parents, siblings, and my cousin. The journey was special for several reasons.

We traveled by bus, and the drive was scenic, with views of the Himalayas on one side and terraced fields on the other. Upon reaching Pokhara, we spent the first day exploring the Phewa Lake area. We went boating on the lake, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and the stunning reflection of Mount Machapuchhre in the water. The next day, we trekked to Sarangkot for a breathtaking sunrise view over the mountains. It was an unforgettable experience as we watched the sun rise over the snow-capped peaks while sipping tea in the chilly morning air.

During the journey, we also visited several temples and caves, including the Gupteshwor Cave and Devi's Fall. What made this trip particularly memorable was the combination of natural beauty, adventure, and spending quality time with family. We also had the chance to enjoy delicious local food, like momo and thukpa, which added a special touch to our experience.

What made this trip even more memorable was the bond we shared. Since everyone in my family is so busy with work or studies, it was rare to have such a family trip. The laughter, shared stories, and time spent together made this journey unforgettable. I’ll always cherish this trip for the warmth of family and the beauty of Pokhara.

Part 2: Describe your favorite teacher

My favorite teacher was Mr. Rajan Sharma, who taught English in my high school. He was not just a teacher but also a mentor who played a significant role in shaping my understanding of language and literature. What made him special was his ability to make learning both engaging and meaningful. He had a unique way of explaining complex concepts in simple terms, and he always encouraged critical thinking.

One of the things I admired most about Mr. Sharma was his passion for literature. His enthusiasm for English was infectious, and he often made lessons feel like an exciting journey into the world of words. He didn’t just stick to the textbook; he brought in extra resources, including short stories, poems, and plays, making learning more dynamic. What really set him apart was his patient demeanor. He never rushed through lessons and always made sure that everyone understood the material before moving on.

Mr. Sharma also inspired me to develop a deeper appreciation for reading and writing. He encouraged us to express our thoughts creatively, and his feedback on assignments was always constructive and thoughtful. He often took the time to guide students individually, ensuring that each of us could reach our full potential. His belief in me boosted my confidence, not just in English, but in other areas of life as well. Mr. Sharma’s influence extended beyond the classroom, as he instilled in me a love for learning that continues to shape my approach to education today.

Part 3 Questions:

1.     What qualities make a good teacher?

A good teacher possesses a combination of knowledge, patience, and the ability to engage students effectively. They should be approachable and create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions. A good teacher is also empathetic, understanding that each student learns differently. They should be able to adapt their teaching style to meet the needs of all learners. Additionally, enthusiasm and a genuine passion for the subject can inspire students and encourage them to develop a love for learning. Lastly, good communication skills and fairness are crucial in building a positive teacher-student relationship.

2.     How has teaching changed in your country?

Teaching in Nepal has evolved over the years with the increasing use of technology in classrooms. Earlier, teaching methods were more traditional, with a focus on rote memorization. Today, interactive learning, digital tools, and multimedia resources are increasingly integrated into lessons. Teachers are now encouraged to adopt student-centered teaching, allowing for more discussions and hands-on activities. The introduction of online education has also changed the landscape, especially after the pandemic, with more students now accessing lessons through digital platforms. However, the shift to these modern methods is still a work in progress in some regions of Nepal.

3.     Should teachers be strict or friendly?

Ideally, a balance between being strict and friendly works best for a teacher. A strict teacher can help maintain discipline and ensure that students stay focused and respect boundaries. However, being overly strict can create an environment of fear rather than encouragement. On the other hand, a friendly teacher who is approachable and empathetic fosters trust and makes students feel comfortable. The key is to set clear boundaries while also being understanding and supportive. A friendly yet firm approach allows teachers to nurture students’ growth while maintaining structure and respect in the classroom.

Part 2: Describe a skill you would like to learn

One skill I would love to learn is photography. I have always been fascinated by the art of capturing moments, emotions, and beautiful scenes through the lens. Photography allows you to convey stories and evoke emotions without words, and it seems like a perfect blend of art and technology. I believe learning this skill will help me express myself creatively and also enhance my ability to document experiences and memories in a meaningful way.

The reason I want to learn photography is because I have always enjoyed capturing moments with my phone, but I feel that I lack the technical knowledge to make my photos truly stand out. With professional photography, I could learn how to adjust lighting, focus, composition, and angles effectively, which would take my pictures to the next level. I also want to learn how to edit photos and create compelling visual stories that reflect my perspective and creativity.

To learn this skill, I plan to take a photography course. I’ll start by learning the basics of camera settings, such as shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and then move on to more advanced techniques. I also want to practice regularly and attend workshops or online tutorials to improve my skills. Additionally, I plan to invest in a digital camera and explore photography as a hobby. Over time, I hope to get better at editing photos and possibly even explore photography as a side business.

This skill will be useful to me in many ways, both personally and professionally. It will allow me to capture and preserve memories, create visual content for social media, and perhaps even use photography in my marketing career for brand promotion and storytelling.

Basic financial literacy, time management, and digital literacy are also important skills for children to acquire, as they help students to navigate the modern world successfully. In addition to these, fostering creativity, curiosity, and adaptability can prepare children for future challenges.

3.     How has the way we learn skills changed?

The way we learn skills has changed significantly in recent years, especially with the rise of technology. In the past, learning a skill usually required formal education or apprenticeship. Today, the internet offers countless resources, from online courses and tutorials to apps that teach specific skills. Learning has become more accessible and flexible, allowing individuals to learn at their own pace, anytime and anywhere. Moreover, interactive learning platforms and virtual reality are becoming popular tools for skill development, enhancing engagement and experience. The book I recently read is "Muna Madan", written by Laxmi Prasad Devkota, one of Nepal’s most beloved and renowned poets. This epic narrative poem is a classic in Nepali literature, and it holds a special place in the hearts of many. The story revolves around Muna and Madan, a young couple deeply in love but separated by circumstances that test their devotion.

What I truly appreciated about this book was Devkota’s poetic style. His rich, lyrical prose evokes powerful emotions and paints vivid pictures of the landscape, characters, and their internal struggles. The story is tragic yet deeply moving, and the portrayal of love and separation resonated with me deeply. I found the characters' journey both heart-wrenching and beautiful, making this book unforgettable. Although the story is full of sadness, it ultimately teaches the reader about the endurance of love and the sacrifices people make for their loved ones. It’s a deeply emotional and thought-provoking read that stayed with me long after I finished it.

Overall, despite digital distractions, reading books remains a beloved activity for those who enjoy escaping into stories or gaining knowledge.

2.     How important is reading for children?

Early reading habits are essential in building a lifelong love for learning and are crucial for academic success and emotional growth throughout their lives.

Reading online and reading a paper book offer distinct experiences. Online reading is convenient and allows access to a wide range of content, including articles, blogs, and e-books, with the ability to search and browse quickly. However, online reading often involves distractions, such as notifications or advertisements. Paper books, on the other hand, offer a more immersive and focused experience. Without the distraction of screens, readers can fully engage with the material. Additionally, the tactile nature of holding a paper book and turning its pages creates a more personal connection with the reading experience.

Part 2: Describe a time when you helped someone

A memorable time when I helped someone was when I assisted my neighbor who was going through a difficult time after losing a close family member. She was overwhelmed with grief and responsibilities, and I noticed that she was struggling to manage everything, from organizing funeral arrangements to taking care of household tasks.

I decided to step in and offer my support by helping with chores, such as cooking meals and cleaning the house. Additionally, I offered to help with the arrangements for the funeral and made sure she had someone to talk to when she needed emotional support. I also spent time with her family to ensure everything was in order during such a challenging period.

I helped her because I felt it was important to show empathy during such a sorrowful time. I knew that going through loss could be overwhelming, and I wanted to make things easier for her. Offering my assistance was a way to show that I genuinely cared about her well-being and wanted to support her in any way I could.

Helping her made me feel gratified and fulfilled. It reminded me of the importance of community and supporting others in their time of need. It was a reminder that even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact on someone’s life during their most challenging moments.

Acts of kindness and generosity are deeply embedded in the culture, and many individuals feel a moral responsibility to help others. People often work together to support one another, especially in times of crisis or hardship.

2.     How can we encourage people to help those in need?

To encourage people to help those in need, it’s important to raise awareness about the challenges others face. Educational programs, social media campaigns, and community discussions can highlight the importance of empathy and volunteering. Encouraging a culture of compassion and selflessness can motivate people to help, even in small ways, when others are in need.

3.     Should children be taught to help others?

Yes, teaching children to help others is incredibly important. It instills in them a sense of responsibility, compassion, and empathy. When children learn the value of helping others from a young age, they develop a lifelong attitude of kindness and generosity. Helping others teaches children the importance of community, cooperation, and how their actions can make a positive impact on others’ lives. Whether through small acts of kindness or involvement in community service, learning to help others shapes children into socially responsible and emotionally intelligent individuals.

6. Describe a traditional festival in your country

You should say:

  • What people do during the festival
  • And explain why you like it

Part 3 Questions:

  • Why are festivals important?
  • How have festivals changed over time?
  • Are traditional festivals still important to young people?

Part 2: Describe a traditional festival in your country

One of the most significant traditional festivals in Nepal is Dashain, which is the biggest and most widely celebrated festival in the country. Dashain is a Hindu festival that usually takes place in September or October and lasts for 15 days. It celebrates the victory of good over evil, symbolized by the victory of goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and involves various customs and rituals. People decorate their homes with colorful rangolis and flowers, and temples are filled with worshippers offering prayers to Durga and other deities. One of the most significant aspects of Dashain is the Tika ceremony, where elders put a mixture of yogurt, rice, and vermillion powder (Tika) on the foreheads of younger family members as a blessing. In return, younger people offer Jamara (barley grass) and receive blessings in the form of money or gifts.

During Dashain, families come together from all parts of the country, and many people who live abroad return to their homes to celebrate with their loved ones. People also indulge in feasts, particularly mutton, buff, and sweets. Traditional dances and songs are part of the celebrations, and in the later days, many participate in the sword-wielding ritual, where young men demonstrate their bravery and strength.

I like Dashain because it is a time for family bonding and reflection. It brings people together, strengthens family ties, and provides a break from the daily grind. I also enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, the rituals, and the opportunity to reflect on the significance of good triumphing over evil.

Part 3 Questions:

1.     Why are festivals important?

Festivals are important because they serve as a way to celebrate cultural heritage, community bonds, and spiritual values. They offer an opportunity for families to come together, reinforcing social ties and allowing for shared experiences. Festivals also provide a break from daily routines, bringing joy, happiness, and a sense of belonging. Additionally, they help preserve traditions and pass down cultural practices to younger generations. Festivals foster gratitude, reflection, and an appreciation for the blessings in life. They also bring people closer, regardless of their differences, through common celebrations and activities.

2.     How have festivals changed over time?

Festivals have evolved over time, mainly due to modernization and the influence of globalization. Many traditional festivals have seen changes in how they are celebrated. In the past, they were centered around rituals, family gatherings, and local customs, but now, with the influence of technology, they have become more commercialized and globalized. Social media, online shopping, and entertainment have made festivals more accessible, but also less focused on their traditional and spiritual roots. People also spend more time in urban settings, and traditional customs may be diluted or adapted. Despite this, festivals still maintain their importance as cultural milestones.

3.     Are traditional festivals still important to young people?

Yes, traditional festivals still hold significant importance for young people, although the way they celebrate may vary. Many young people enjoy the cultural and social aspects of festivals, such as spending time with family, participating in cultural performances, and taking part in community activities. However, the younger generation may also incorporate modern influences into their celebrations, such as using social media to share festival moments or opting for more contemporary ways of celebrating. Despite these changes, the core values of traditional festivals, such as family bonding, spiritual reflection, and cultural pride, continue to be valued by many young people.

Part 3 Questions:

  • Why is decision-making important in life?
  • Should young people make their own decisions?
  • What skills are needed to make good decisions?

Part 2: Describe a difficult decision you made

One of the most difficult decisions I made was choosing to leave my hometown and move to a new city for higher education. I made this decision about two years ago, when I was offered the opportunity to study at a prestigious institution in the capital city. While it was a chance to advance my career and gain better opportunities, the decision was extremely hard because I had to leave my family, friends, and the familiar comfort of my hometown.

What made this decision difficult was the emotional attachment I had to my family and community. I had always lived in Kalika-5, Padampur, where I felt safe, supported, and understood by those around me. Moving to a bigger city meant I would have to adapt to a new environment, live independently, and face the challenges of being away from home. Additionally, the fear of unknown outcomes—whether I would succeed or struggle in the new environment—made the decision even harder.

After making the decision, I moved to the city and settled in my new college life. It took a while to adjust to the fast-paced lifestyle, the stress of academics, and the absence of my family. However, over time, I grew more confident in my ability to handle new challenges. The experience taught me to be independent and self-reliant, and while I do miss my family, I am proud of the personal growth I have achieved. Ultimately, this difficult decision opened up new opportunities for me that I would not have experienced if I had stayed in my hometown.

Part 3 Questions:

1.     Why is decision-making important in life?

Decision-making is crucial because it shapes our future and influences the direction of our lives. Every choice we make, whether big or small, impacts our personal growth, relationships, career, and well-being. Good decisions allow us to achieve our goals, live with purpose, and maintain a balanced life. On the other hand, poor decisions can lead to setbacks, missed opportunities, and regret. Developing effective decision-making skills helps us navigate life's challenges with confidence and clarity, ensuring that we make choices that align with our values and aspirations.

2.     Should young people make their own decisions?

Yes, young people should be encouraged to make their own decisions, as it helps them develop independence, responsibility, and critical thinking skills. Making decisions allows them to learn from their mistakes and successes, which is essential for personal growth. However, it is also important for young people to seek advice from trusted mentors, family, or friends when facing significant decisions. Guidance and support can help them make more informed choices, but the process of decision-making itself is key to developing confidence and self-reliance as they transition into adulthood.

3.     What skills are needed to make good decisions?

To make good decisions, one needs a combination of critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence. Critical thinking involves analyzing information, evaluating alternatives, and understanding potential consequences before making a choice. Problem-solving helps identify the best solution to a challenge. Emotional intelligence is important for understanding and managing emotions, which can influence decisions. Additionally, having self-awareness and the ability to assess personal values and goals ensures decisions align with one’s long-term aspirations. Communication skills also play a role, as seeking advice from others can provide valuable insights in the decision-making process.

I use it for communication, whether it’s for calling, texting, or video chatting with friends and family. The social media apps help me stay connected with people, while email apps keep me on top of work and important updates.

I also rely on my smartphone for navigation when I’m traveling, using maps and GPS to help me find my way. It’s especially helpful in unfamiliar areas, saving me time and effort. Additionally, I use it for banking, making payments, checking balances, and even transferring money. The shopping apps on my phone allow me to buy anything from groceries to clothes, making life much more convenient.

Another feature I use frequently is the calendar and reminder apps, which help me organize my schedule and remember important tasks. My smartphone is also a source of entertainment, as I use it for listening to music, watching videos, and reading news.

This piece of technology is incredibly useful because it combines multiple functions into one device, saving me from having to carry separate tools like a camera, calculator, alarm clock, and more. It has made many aspects of my life more efficient, from work to personal errands. It has also made staying in touch with loved ones easier, especially when I’m far away. Overall, my smartphone has significantly changed my daily routines and made life more organized and connected.

Part 3 Questions:

1.     How has technology changed our daily lives?

Technology has dramatically transformed our daily lives by increasing efficiency and accessibility. Communication has become instant, with smartphones and messaging apps allowing us to stay connected with anyone around the world. Tasks that once required physical effort, like shopping or banking, can now be done online. Automation and smart devices have made homes more convenient, while digital platforms provide access to a wealth of information and entertainment. Overall, technology has streamlined daily chores, improved productivity, and connected people globally, making life more convenient and fast-paced.

2.     What are the disadvantages of technology?

While technology has many benefits, it also comes with disadvantages. Over-reliance on digital devices can lead to a decline in face-to-face communication and social interactions. The constant use of smartphones and computers can result in physical health issues, such as eye strain, poor posture, and lack of physical activity. Furthermore, technology can create a sense of isolation, as people may prefer interacting online rather than in person. The constant presence of distractions also reduces productivity and can contribute to mental health issues, such as anxiety or addiction to screens and social media.

3.     How can older people benefit from modern technology?

Older people can greatly benefit from modern technology in various ways. Communication tools like smartphones, video calls, and social media help them stay connected with family and friends, reducing feelings of loneliness. Health apps and devices can monitor vital signs, remind them to take medications, and assist with telemedicine appointments, improving healthcare access. Technology also allows older adults to access online learning resources, helping them engage in lifelong learning and stay mentally active. Smart home devices, such as voice assistants, can assist with daily tasks, making their lives more convenient and independent.

Part 3 Questions:

  • What are common types of housing in your country?
  • How do housing needs change as people get older?
  • Should the government help people buy homes?

Part 2: Describe your ideal house or apartment

My ideal house would be located in a peaceful and scenic area, ideally on the outskirts of a city, where I can enjoy a balance between nature and urban convenience. I envision it being near a park or river, allowing me to take long walks and enjoy the serenity of nature.

The house would be spacious, with modern architecture, featuring large windows to let in plenty of natural light. I’d love it to have a minimalist design, with neutral colors and sleek furniture. The living room would be large and cozy, with a comfortable sofa and a bookshelf full of my favorite books.

In terms of facilities, the house would have an open-plan kitchen, equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, including a dishwasher, microwave, and oven. There would also be a home office to work from, with plenty of storage and natural light. For entertainment, I would have a home theater system and a music corner to play instruments and enjoy some relaxation time. A garden with a variety of plants, flowers, and a small vegetable patch would be an essential part of the house.

This house would be ideal for me because it balances comfort and efficiency, offering a peaceful retreat while still being close to the conveniences of the city. The peaceful environment would provide the perfect place to relax, focus on work, and spend quality time with family.

Part 3 Questions:

1.     What are common types of housing in your country?

In Nepal, common types of housing vary from traditional houses to modern apartments. In rural areas, many people live in single-story homes, made of mud, brick, and stone. These houses are typically small with simple structures, often with courtyards. In urban areas like Kathmandu, there are more multi-story buildings and apartments due to the growing population. Townhouses and duplexes are also common in suburban areas. While traditional houses focus on practical living spaces, modern apartments often prioritize comfort and amenities, catering to the urban lifestyle.

2.     How do housing needs change as people get older?

As people get older, their housing needs tend to change to accommodate their physical and health requirements. They may prefer smaller, more manageable spaces, as large homes can become difficult to maintain. Many older adults seek homes that are easily accessible, with fewer stairs and wider doorways for mobility aids. Single-story homes or ground-floor apartments are often preferred to avoid the challenges of climbing stairs. Additionally, older individuals may look for homes with nearby healthcare facilities and supportive environments, such as communities with assistance services or elderly-friendly amenities.

3.     Should the government help people buy homes?

Yes, I believe the government should help people buy homes, especially those who are first-time buyers or have low incomes. Housing is a basic need, and many people struggle to afford it, especially in growing cities where property prices are high. Government assistance in the form of subsidies, low-interest loans, or tax benefits can help people attain homeownership, leading to a more stable life. This would also stimulate the economy and improve the quality of life for citizens. However, the government should ensure that the support is equitable and sustainable.

Part 2: Describe a time when you were very busy

A time when I was extremely busy was during the launch of a new product at my job as a marketing officer. It was last year when my company decided to introduce a new two-wheeler part, and I was tasked with overseeing the entire marketing campaign. The timeline was tight, and there were multiple tasks to handle, including advertisement planning, coordinating with suppliers, and ensuring that everything was ready for the launch event.

I had to manage client meetings, content creation for promotional materials, and social media marketing. Additionally, I had to ensure that all team members were on the same page and working efficiently. It was a high-pressure situation, as we had to meet deadlines and ensure that everything was aligned with the brand's vision.

To manage my time, I broke down my responsibilities into smaller tasks and set realistic deadlines for each. I created a detailed schedule and prioritized urgent tasks over less time-sensitive ones. I also delegated certain responsibilities to my team, trusting them to handle aspects of the marketing campaign that aligned with their strengths. By constantly reviewing the progress and adjusting my schedule when necessary, I managed to complete everything on time, and the product launch was successful. This experience taught me the importance of effective time management and delegating tasks when under pressure.

Part 3 Questions:

1.     Do people in your country lead busy lives?

Yes, many people in my country, especially in urban areas, lead busy lives. Due to the increasing demands of work, education, and family responsibilities, people often juggle multiple tasks. In cities like Kathmandu, people typically work long hours, and their schedules are packed with activities. As the country modernizes and develops, there is a growing expectation to maintain a fast-paced lifestyle, which can sometimes lead to stress and burnout. However, people still try to balance work and personal life, and some seek leisure activities and weekend getaways to unwind.

2.     How can people manage their time better?

To manage time better, people can start by setting clear goals and prioritizing tasks based on their importance and urgency. Using tools like to-do lists, calendars, and task management apps can help stay organized. It's also important to avoid procrastination and focus on completing tasks within the set time frame. Delegating tasks, where possible, can help reduce the workload. Additionally, learning to say no to unnecessary commitments and taking breaks to avoid burnout is crucial for maintaining long-term productivity and well-being. Consistency and planning are key to effective time management.

3.     Is being busy always a good thing?

Being busy is not always a good thing. While staying active and productive can be fulfilling, constant busyness without proper rest can lead to stress and burnout. It is important to maintain a balance between work and relaxation. Being busy without purpose or meaningful tasks can also lead to inefficiency. Therefore, it’s essential to evaluate whether the tasks we are engaged in are contributing positively to our personal or professional growth. Having time for hobbies, self-care, and quality time with loved ones is equally important as being productive.
