NEB Grade 12 Unit 19 Using "Used to and Would"

 

   Difference between Used to and Would

1. Used to

Function: Talks about past habits and past states (situations that are no longer true).
Structure:

Ø  Affirmative: Subject + used to + verb 1

Ø  Negative: Subject + didn’t use to + verb 1

Ø  Question: Did + subject + use to + verb 1?

Examples:

  1. I used to play football every weekend. (habit)
  2. She used to live in Kathmandu. (state)
  3. He didn’t use to like coffee.
  4. Did you use to have long hair?

2. Would

Function: Talks about past habits or repeated actions, but not past states.
Structure: Subject + would + base verb (verb 1)
(usually used in storytelling or descriptions of the past)

Examples:

  • When we were kids, we would play in the rain. (habit/action)
  • Every summer, Grandpa would tell us stories.

Note: She would live in Pokhara. (Incorrect if describing a state — use "used to")
