Definition of Adjective

An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or a pronoun. It gives more information about the quality, quantity, size, shape, color, origin, etc.

Example:

  • She has a beautiful smile.
    (Here, "beautiful" is an adjective modifying the noun "smile.")

Types of Adjectives with Examples

1.      Before a noun (attributive position):

2.      After a linking verb (predicative position):

o    The soup tastes delicious.

3.      To compare nouns (comparative/superlative forms):

o    She is taller than her sister.

o    This is the best movie.

4.      With pronouns to clarify:

o    I like her dress, not his.

3. Demonstrative Adjective

Definition:
Points out specific nouns or pronouns and shows which one or those.

4. Possessive Adjective

Definition:
Shows ownership or possession of a noun.

Uses:
Placed before a noun to show who owns something.

Examples:

  • This is my car.
  • Her phone is on the table.
  • Their house is beautiful.

5. Interrogative Adjective

Definition:
Used to ask questions about nouns.

Uses:
Followed by a noun to inquire about something.

Examples:

  • Which book do you want?
  • What color is your bike?
  • Whose coat is this?

6. Distributive Adjective

Definition:
Refers to individual items or people within a group.

Uses:
Used with singular nouns to emphasize individuality.

Examples:

  • Each student must bring a pencil.
  • Every child received a gift.
  • Neither answer is correct.

7. Numeral Adjective

Definition:
Indicates the number or order of nouns.

Uses:
Used when the exact number or sequence is mentioned.

Examples:

  • He has two brothers.
  • She won the first prize.
  • Several people were present.
