Definition of Adjective with its types, uses and examples

What is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes, modifies, or gives more information about a noun or pronoun.

Example:

·         She has a beautiful smile.
(beautiful describes the noun smile)


Types of Adjectives (with Definition, Use, and Examples)


1. Descriptive Adjectives

Definition: Describe the quality, color, size, shape, or condition of a noun.
Use: Answers the question "What kind?"

Examples:

·         blue, tall, old, sweet, honest, beautiful

In sentences:

·         He is a tall boy.

·         She wore a red dress.


2. Quantitative Adjectives

Definition: Show how much or how many of something.
Use: Answers the questions "How much?" or "How many?"

Examples:

·         some, many, much, few, little, all, several, each

In sentences:

·         She has many friends.

·         I drank some water.


3. Demonstrative Adjectives

Definition: Point out specific nouns.
Use: Always followed by the noun.

Examples:

·         this, that, these, those

In sentences:

·         This book is interesting.

·         Those apples are ripe.


4. Possessive Adjectives

Definition: Show ownership or possession.
Use: Always come before the noun.

Examples:

·         my, your, his, her, its, our, their

In sentences:

·         My dog is very friendly.

·         Their house is big.


5. Interrogative Adjectives

Definition: Used to ask questions and are followed by a noun.

Examples:

·         which, what, whose

In sentences:

·         Which color do you like?

·         Whose bag is this?


6. Comparative Adjectives

Definition: Compare two nouns. Usually formed by adding -er or using more.

Examples:

·         taller, smaller, more beautiful

In sentences:

·         He is taller than me.

·         This book is more interesting than that one.


7. Superlative Adjectives

Definition: Show the highest degree of quality among three or more things.
Use: Add -est or use most.

Examples:

·         tallest, smartest, most beautiful

In sentences:

·         She is the smartest girl in the class.

·         This is the most delicious cake.


8. Distributive Adjectives

Definition: Refer to individual members of a group.

Examples:

·         each, every, either, neither

In sentences:

·         Each student must submit the form.

·         Neither answer is correct.
