Definition of Interjection

An interjection is a word or short phrase used to express a sudden emotion, feeling, or reaction. It is not grammatically related to the rest of the sentence. Interjections are often followed by an exclamation mark (!) or a comma (,) depending on the intensity of the emotion.

Examples:

·         Wow! That’s a beautiful painting.

·         Oops! I dropped the glass.

·         Oh, I didn’t know you were here.


Types of Interjections

Here are the main types of interjections based on the emotion they express:


1. Interjection of Joy

Used to express happiness, pleasure, or excitement.
Examples:

2. Interjection of Surprise

Examples:

7. Interjection of Attention or Call

Used to attract someone’s attention.
