IELTS Matching heading practice The Discovery of Penicillin

 Passage: The Discovery of Penicillin

Paragraph A
Penicillin, the world’s first widely used antibiotic, was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928. While working with bacteria in his laboratory, he noticed that a mold called Penicillium notatum killed or inhibited the growth of nearby bacteria.

Fleming’s discovery initially received little attention, as the process of producing penicillin in large quantities was difficult. It was not until the early 1940s that scientists such as Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain developed methods to mass-produce penicillin for medical use.

Paragraph C
During World War II, penicillin became crucial for treating infected wounds among soldiers. Its success in reducing infection rates led to widespread use in civilian medicine and revolutionized the treatment of bacterial diseases.

Modern antibiotics have since been developed, but penicillin remains a vital drug for treating certain bacterial infections. Its discovery marked the beginning of the antibiotic era, fundamentally changing healthcare worldwide.
