What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a globally recognized English language test used for:

  • Studying abroad
  • Working abroad
  • Migration/PR (Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand)

It measures your ability to communicate in English in four skills:

1.      Listening

2.      Reading

3.      Writing

4.      Speaking


IELTS Versions

There are two types of IELTS:

1 IELTS Academic

For:

  • University/college admission
  • Nursing registration
  • Professional jobs

2 IELTS General Training

For:

  • Permanent Residency (PR)
  • Skilled migration
  • Work and training programs

Listening & Speaking are the same in both.
Reading & Writing are different.


IELTS Exam Format (4 Modules)


1 LISTENING

  • Time: 30 minutes + 10 min transfer time (paper test)
  • Questions: 40
  • Sections: 4 parts
  • Skills tested: understanding accents, topics, and conversations.

2 READING

  • Time: 60 minutes
  • Questions: 40
  • Academic: 3 long passages
  • General Training: 3 sections (short + long texts)

Skills tested: scanning, skimming, finding key ideas, vocabulary understanding.


3 WRITING

  • Time: 60 minutes
  • Tasks:
    Task 1 (150+ words)
    • Academic: describe charts/graphs/maps/processes
    • GT: write a letter (formal/informal)

Task 2 (250+ words)

    • Essay on a given topic

Skills tested: organization, vocabulary, grammar, coherence.


4 SPEAKING

  • Time: 11–14 minutes
  • Format: face-to-face interview
  • Parts:

1.      Introduction & questions

2.      Cue card (long turn)

3.      Discussion on abstract topics

Skills tested: fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary.


IELTS Scoring

Each module is scored from Band 0 to 9.

Band meaning:

  • Band 9: Expert
  • Band 8: Very good
  • Band 7: Good
  • Band 6: Competent
  • Band 5: Modest

Your overall band score is the average of all 4 modules.

·         IELTS UKVI Life Skills (A1 / B1): NPR 27,400

Note: IDP Nepal also confirms the 2025 pricing: per their page, from July 1, 2025, the test fee for Paper is NPR 36,200, Computer NPR 33,000, UKVI Paper NPR 34,000, UKVI Computer NPR 28,800, Life Skills NPR 24,000.


Validity of IELTS Score

·         According to IDP, your IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for 2 years. As per the British Council, “organisations will usually not accept your results if they are more than two years old.” IELTS Partners officially say the same: 2-year validity from test date.
