 PTE Grammar Rules for Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening

1. Subject–Verb Agreement (SVA)

Rule:

The verb must agree with the subject in number (singular/plural).

Examples:

  • He plays football. (singular)
  • They play football. (plural)
  • The list of items is on the table.
  • A number of students are absent.

Common Traps:

  • Along with / with / as well as → ignore extra subject
    Ram, along with his friends, is coming.

2. Tense (Very Important)

Common Tenses in PTE:

Present Simple

facts, habits

  • She works in a bank.
  • Water boils at 100°C.

Past Simple

completed action

  • He went to school yesterday.

🔹 Present Perfect

action with present result

  • She has finished her work.

Future (will / going to)

  • I will call you.
  • I am going to start a business.

3. Nouns

Types:

  • Countable: book, apple
  • Uncountable: water, advice, information

Examples:

  • Much information (not informations )
  • Many books

Common Errors:

  • Advice (correct) advices
  • Furniture (correct) furnitures

4. Verbs

Forms:

  • V1 (base): go
  • V2 (past): went
  • V3 (past participle): gone
  • V-ing: going

Examples:

  • She is writing a letter.
  • He has completed the task.

5. Adjectives

Use:

Describe nouns

Examples:

  • A beautiful girl
  • A difficult question

Order of adjectives:

Opinion → Size → Age → Color → Noun

  • A beautiful small old red car

6. Adverbs

Use:

Describe verbs, adjectives, or whole sentences

Examples:

  • He runs quickly.
  • She is very smart.

Common confusion:

  • Hard (adj/adv)
  • Hardly = almost not
    👉 He works hard.
    👉 He hardly works.

7. Prepositions

Common Usage:

  • In → months/years → in 2024
  • On → days → on Monday
  • At → time → at 5 pm

Examples:

  • She lives in Nepal.
  • He arrived at the station.

8. Articles (a, an, the)

Rules:

  • a → consonant sound → a boy
  • an → vowel sound → an apple
  • the → specific thing

Examples:

  • I saw a dog.
  • The dog was barking.

9. Conjunctions

Use:

Join words/sentences

Examples:

  • and → addition
  • but → contrast
  • because → reason

She is poor but honest.
He stayed home because he was sick.


10. Collocations (VERY IMPORTANT in PTE)

Words that naturally go together

Examples:

  • Make a decision (not do )
  • Take a break
  • Heavy rain
  • Strong coffee

11. Pronouns

Use:

Replace nouns

Examples:

  • Ram is my friend. He is kind.
  • This is my book. It is mine.

12. Common Fill in the Blanks Patterns

Example 1:

Education plays an ______ role in life.
important (adjective)

Example 2:

She ______ completed her work.
has (present perfect)

Example 3:

He runs very ______.
fast / quickly (adverb)

Example 4:

A number of students ______ absent.

Tips to Score High in PTE FIB

Read the whole sentence first
Identify grammar type (noun/verb/adjective)
Check tense clues (yesterday, now, since)
Look for collocations
Eliminate wrong options
