PTE Repeat Sentence

PTE Repeat Sentence

What is “Repeat Sentence” in PTE?

In this task, you will:

  • Hear a sentence (3–9 seconds)
  • You must repeat it exactly the same
  • Tests:
    • Listening skill
    • Speaking fluency
    • Memory

Overall Importance

  • One of the highest scoring tasks in PTE Speaking
  • Contributes to:
    • Speaking score
    • Listening score

Doing well here can boost your overall band significantly (even 10–15 marks)

How Scoring is Calculated

Your answer is evaluated based on 3 main criteria:

1. Content (Most Important)

  • Did you repeat the sentence correctly?

Scoring logic:

  • Full sentence correct → Full marks
  • Minor mistakes → Partial marks
  • Completely wrong → Zero

Even if you miss some words, you still get marks!

2. Oral Fluency

  • Smoothness of your speech

You should:

  • Speak continuously
  • Avoid long pauses
  • Maintain natural speed

Hesitation = marks reduced

3. Pronunciation

  • How clearly you speak

Focus on:

  • Clear words
  • Correct stress
  • Understandable accent

Accent (Nepali/Indian) is OK if clear

Example of Scoring

Sentence:

“The university will announce the results next week.”

Your responses:

Best Answer:
“The university will announce the results next week.”
Full marks

Partial Answer:
“The university will announce results next week.”
Good marks (small word missing)

Poor Answer:
“The results next week university announce.”
Very low marks

Score Range (Approximate Idea)

Each question:

  • Content: 0–3 points
  • Fluency: 0–5 points
  • Pronunciation: 0–5 points

Total per question contributes to overall score (not shown individually in exam)

Key Strategy for High Score (79+)

Priority Order:

1.      Content

2.      Fluency

3.      Pronunciation

Meaning + structure > perfection

Important Truth

  • You do NOT need 100% correct sentences
  • Even 60–70% accuracy + good fluency = high score

Pro Tips to Max Score

  • Speak immediately (no delay)
  • Don’t stop mid-sentence
  • Repeat as much as you remember
  • Keep grammar structure correct

Golden Rule

“Say something smooth and meaningful rather than staying silent.”

Most Effective Tips

1. Focus on Meaning, Not Words

Don’t try to memorize every word.
Understand the idea of the sentence.

Example:

Think: lecture delayed because of problem

2. Use “Chunking Technique”

Break sentence into parts:

Example:

“Students are required / to submit assignments / before Friday.”

Repeat in chunks:

  • Students are required
  • to submit assignments
  • before Friday

3. Start Immediately

  • Don’t wait too long
  • Speak as soon as recording starts

4. Keep Natural Rhythm & Intonation

  • Speak like a normal conversation
  • Don’t sound robotic

5. Don’t Panic If You Forget

  • Repeat what you remember
  • Fluency matters more than perfection

6. Practice Short-Term Memory

  • Listen to English podcasts
  • Repeat immediately after listening

Common Mistakes

  • Long pauses
  • Wrong pronunciation
  • Changing sentence meaning
  • Speaking too fast/slow
