PTE Subject Verb agreements

 Singular subjects take singular verbs

Example Sentences:

  • She runs every morning.
  • He plays football.

PTE-style Fill-in-the-Blank:

  • She ___ every morning. (run/runs) → runs
  • He ___ football on Sundays. (play/plays) → plays

2. Plural subjects take plural verbs

Example Sentences:

  • They run every morning.
  • The students study hard.

PTE-style Fill-in-the-Blank:

  • The students ___ hard. (study/studies) → study
  • They ___ football every evening. (play/plays) → play

3. Two subjects joined by ‘and’ → plural verb

Example Sentences:

  • Rahul and Sajan are friends.
  • My father and mother are teachers.

PTE-style Fill-in-the-Blank:

  • Rahul and Sajan ___ friends. (is/are) → are
  • My father and mother ___ teachers. (is/are) → are

4. Two subjects joined by ‘and’ but refer to a single idea → singular verb

Example Sentences:

  • Bread and butter is my breakfast.
  • Fish and chips is a popular dish.

PTE-style Fill-in-the-Blank:

  • Bread and butter ___ my breakfast. (is/are) → is
  • Fish and chips ___ sold in many restaurants. (is/are) → is

5. Collective nouns (team, family, class) → singular/plural

Example Sentences:

  • The team is winning. (single unit)
  • The team are arguing among themselves. (individual members)

PTE-style Fill-in-the-Blank:

  • The team ___ winning. (is/are) → is
  • The players ___ arguing among themselves. (is/are) → are

6. Indefinite pronouns (everyone, someone, nobody) → singular verb

Example Sentences:

  • Everyone is invited.
  • Somebody has left a bag.

PTE-style Fill-in-the-Blank:

  • Everyone ___ invited. (is/are) → is
  • Somebody ___ calling you. (is/are) → is

7. Some pronouns (both, few, many) → plural verb

Example Sentences:

  • Both are coming.
  • Many have passed the exam.

  • Many students ___ passed the exam. (has/have) → have

8. Either…or / Neither…nor → verb agrees with nearest subject

Example Sentences:

  • Neither the teacher nor the students are late.
  • Either Rahul or Sita is responsible.

  • Either Rahul or Sita ___ responsible. (is/are) → is
  • Neither the boys nor the girl ___ playing today. (is/are) → is

9. Expressions like ‘as well as’ → singular

Example Sentences:

  • Sita, as well as her friends, is coming.
  • My father, as well as my uncles, is attending the ceremony.

10. Titles of books, movies, organizations → singular

Example Sentences:

  • “The Godfather” is a classic movie.
