Use of "When" and "While" in the Past Tense for the ATI TEAS Version 7, Followed by Practice Questions with Answers and Explanations

Key Rules for "When" vs. "While" in Past Tense

Core Difference

Conjunction

Meaning

Action Type

Tense Pairing

When

One action happens at that moment (often interrupts)

Short / sudden / sequential

Simple past + simple past OR Past continuous + simple past

While

Two actions happen at the same time (during)

Long / ongoing / parallel

Past continuous + past continuous OR Past continuous + simple past

Rule 1: When + Simple Past (Interruption)

Use when + simple past to show a short action that interrupts or happens during another action.

Structure 1: Past Continuous + When + Simple Past

Longer action (was/were + -ing) is interrupted by a shorter action (simple past).

I was watching TV when the phone rang.
(Ongoing watching → interrupted by ringing)

She was driving home when she saw the accident.

The patient was resting when the nurse entered the room.

Structure 2: Simple Past + When + Simple Past (Sequential)

Two short actions happening one after another or at the same moment.

He stood up when the teacher walked in.
(At that moment, he stood up)

The lights went out when I turned the switch.

She smiled when she heard the news.

Rule 2: While + Past Continuous (Simultaneous Actions)

Use while to show two ongoing actions happening at the same time.

Structure 1: While + Past Continuous, + Past Continuous

While I was studying, my brother was playing video games.
(Both actions ongoing simultaneously)

The students were taking notes while the teacher was lecturing.

She was cooking dinner while he was setting the table.

Structure 2: While + Past Continuous + Simple Past

One ongoing action (past continuous) during which a shorter action happens.
(Similar to "when," but while emphasizes the duration)

While I was walking to work, I met an old friend.
(Walking = ongoing; meeting = short action during that time)

The child fell asleep while his mother was reading a story.

He twisted his ankle while he was running.

Common TEAS Errors to Avoid

Incorrect

Why Wrong

Correct

While the phone rang, I watched TV.

While needs ongoing action; ringing is short

When the phone rang, I was watching TV.

When I was eating, I was watching TV.

When implies interruption, not parallel

While I was eating, I was watching TV.

She slept while the alarm rang.

While + short action (rang) is awkward

She was sleeping when the alarm rang.

When I was driving, I was talking.

Acceptable but less precise

While I was driving, I was talking.

TEAS-Specific Tips

  • When + simple past often answers "What happened at that moment?"
  • While + past continuous answers "What was happening during that time?"
  • If both actions are long/ongoing → use while with past continuous in both clauses.
  • If one action is short and interrupts → use when + simple past.
  • If the sentence has was/were + -ing → likely when or while, depending on the other clause.
