Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement for the ATI TEAS Version

Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement for the ATI TEAS Version 7

📚 Part 1: What is Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement?

A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun.
Examples: he, she, it, they, we, who, which, that

An antecedent is the noun that the pronoun refers to.

Example:
Maria submitted her paper.
(Maria = antecedent, her = pronoun)

The Rule:

A pronoun must agree with its antecedent in:

1. Number

  • Singular antecedent → singular pronoun
  • Plural antecedent → plural pronoun

The nurse completed her shift.
The nurses completed their shifts.

2. Person

  • First person → I, we
  • Second person → you
  • Third person → he, she, it, they

If you study, you will succeed.
If you study, he will succeed.

3. Gender

The pronoun must match gender when clearly specified.

The closer antecedent is students (plural)

Another Example:

Closer antecedent = teacher (singular)
