PTE Reorder Paragraphs
This is a strong
framework for PTE Reorder Paragraphs, especially the emphasis on logical
anchors rather than reading every sentence word-for-word.
One important
correction, though: some of the rules are useful tendencies, not
absolute rules. For example, a first sentence can begin with “This” or
“It” if the reference is already supplied by context, and “The” can appear in
an opening sentence when the noun is already identifiable. So in the actual PTE
exam, prioritize logical links and sentence relationships over rigid
grammatical rules.
Refined FIT Strategy for PTE
F
— First sentence
- Look for a
sentence that introduces the main topic.
- Usually
avoid sentences beginning with:
- However
- Therefore
- Consequently
- Moreover
- This /
These / They / It
- Look for a new
noun, person, concept, event, or definition.
I
— Independent clues
Build the middle sequence using:
- Pronoun →
noun:
The company... → It...
- This/These →
previous idea:
The new policy... → This policy...
- A/An → The: a
scientist → the scientist
- General →
specific:
concept → explanation → example
- Cause →
effect:
problem → consequence
- Claim →
example:
statement → For example/For instance...
T
— Time and conclusion
Look for:
- Initially →
later → subsequently → eventually → today
- Before →
after → then
- Finally →
ultimately → in conclusion
But remember: a
conclusion connector does not automatically make a sentence last. Check
whether another sentence logically completes the idea.
The most powerful PTE rule
Instead of
asking:
“Which sentence
sounds like number 1?”
Ask:
“Which
sentence must come immediately before this sentence?”
For example:
A.
Consequently, the company closed several branches.
B. The company experienced a sharp decline in revenue.
A must follow B
because:
decline
in revenue → consequently → branch closures
That relationship
is much stronger than simply looking at vocabulary.
Your Quick Practice
Your sequence is
correct:
E
→ B → D → C → A
The links are:
E: Introduces the retail chain.
↓
B: Explains what management did.
↓
D: They = management.
↓
C: This lack of foresight = management's failure to adapt.
↓
A: Consequently = final consequence.
So the chain is:
Introduction
→ Action → Pronoun reference → Consequence → Final result
That is exactly
the type of logical chain you should train for PTE Reorder Paragraphs.
