A compound sentence is made
up of two independent clauses (two complete sentences that can stand
alone) joined together by a comma (,) + a FANBOYS conjunction.
- Independent Clause 1
+ , + FANBOYS + Independent Clause 2.
- Example:
I wanted to go out, but I was too tired.
(म बाहिर जान चाहन्थें, तर म धेरै थाकेको थिएँ।)

Important Grammar Tips (महत्त्वपूर्ण सुझावहरू)
1.
Comma
Rule: Always put a comma (,) BEFORE
the FANBOYS conjunction when joining two full sentences.
o
✅ I like tea, but she
likes coffee.
o
❌ I like tea but she likes
coffee. (Comma is missing in formal writing)
2.
Two
Complete Sentences: Both sides of FANBOYS must be able
to stand alone as a complete sentence (Subject + Verb).
o
✅ He ran fast, so he won
the race. (Both have subjects & verbs)
o
❌ He ran fast, so won the
race. (Second part is incomplete)
3.
'For' vs
'Because': 'For' means the same as 'because'
but it is more formal and generally comes in the middle of a compound
sentence.
o
✅ He was tired, for he had
worked all day.
4.
'Nor'
Special Rule: 'Nor' is used with negative
ideas. When you use 'nor' to introduce a second negative independent clause,
the second clause normally has inverted word order.
o
✅ She did not call, nor
did she text.
(Notice: did she – inverted)
5.
'Yet' vs
'But': Both show contrast. 'But' is
a simple contrast (तर).
'Yet' shows a surprising contrast (तैपनि / यद्यपि).
'Yet' is often stronger.
o
He is
rich, but he is unhappy.
(Normal contrast)
o
He is
rich, yet he is unhappy.
(Surprising contrast)

📝 Quick Comparison: BUT vs YET
|
Conjunction |
Meaning |
Emphasis |
|
But |
तर |
Simple, direct opposite. |
|
Yet |
तैपनि / अझै |
Surprising contrast (छक्क पार्ने विपरीतता) |
- He is poor, but he is happy.
(सामान्य तुलना) - He is poor, yet he donates money to others.
(अचम्म – गरिब भएर पनि दान दिन्छ, surprising!)
📝 Quick Comparison: SO vs FOR
|
Conjunction |
Meaning |
Direction |
|
So |
त्यसैले |
Result (Cause → Result) |
|
For |
किनभने |
Reason (Statement → Explanation) |
- He was hungry, so he ate.
(भोक → खानु – Result) - He ate, for he was hungry.
(खानु → भोक – Reason given in second part)
❌ Common Mistakes to Avoid (सामान्य गल्तीहरू)
1.
Using a comma with 'so' when it means 'very' (intensifier)
- ❌ It was so, cold.
(Wrong – 'so' here is not a conjunction) - ✅ It was so cold.
(Correct – no comma)
2.
Starting a sentence with FANBOYS in very formal writing
- Less formal: But I didn't go.
- More formal compound structure: I wanted to go, but
I didn't go.
Note: Starting a sentence with And, But, Or, So, Yet, etc.
is not automatically grammatically wrong. It is common in modern English, but
in formal school or exam writing, using them to connect clauses within a
sentence may be preferred.
3.
Forgetting the second subject
- I went home and slept. ✅
This is grammatically correct because one subject I controls both verbs: went and slept. However, it is a simple sentence with a compound predicate, not a compound sentence. - ✅ I went home, and I slept.
This is a compound sentence because both sides contain independent clauses: - I went home.
- I slept.
4.
Using 'nor' without inversion
- ❌ He doesn't smoke, nor he drinks.
- ✅ He doesn't smoke, nor does he drink.
Inversion pattern:
nor + auxiliary/modal + subject +
main verb
Examples:
- nor does he drink
- nor did she call
- nor can I swim
- nor has he arrived
- nor will they come
⭐ Easy Trick to Remember FANBOYS

N – Nor → Negative addition
B – But → Contrast
