PTE Respond to a Situation: 45–50 Score Strategy (Formal & Informal)

PTE Respond to a Situation: 45–50 Score Strategy (Formal & Informal)

Why This Works for 45–50

At this level, the AI is not looking for perfect grammar or advanced vocabulary. It checks three things:

Content

Address the situation and achieve the goal (request, apology, etc.)

Oral Fluency

Speak smoothly, no long pauses

Pronunciation

Clear enough to understand

Key rule: Say the right thing simply. A clear, simple answer beats a complicated, broken one.

Timing: 10 seconds to prepare → 40 seconds to speak .

The Simple Template (Works for Both Formal & Informal)

text

[Greeting] + [State the purpose] + [Reason or detail] + [Request / Next step] + [Polite close]

Choose Your Register First

Greeting

"Good morning, Professor…" / "Hello, Mr.…"

"Hi [Name]!" / "Hey, how's it going?"

Purpose

"I wanted to talk to you about…"

"So, here's the thing…"

Request

"Would it be possible to…"

"Can I please…" / "Could you…"

Close

"Thank you for your time."

"Thanks a lot!" / "Appreciate it!"

Catchy Note-Making Method (10-Second Prep)

Write only 3 words: Who / Goal / Key Detail

Example prompt: "You are a student. You were sick and missed an assignment deadline. Talk to your professor and ask for more time."

Notes:

text

Professor / extension / sick 3 days

That is enough. Do not write full sentences .

Sample Situation 1 — Academic (Formal)

Prompt: You are a university student. Your assignment is due tomorrow, but you have been unwell and cannot finish it. You approach your professor to ask for a short extension.

Catchy Notes:

text

Professor / extension / sick, need 3 days

Sample Answer (~70 words):

Good morning, Professor. I wanted to talk to you about the assignment due tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have been unwell for the past few days, so I could not complete it. Would it be possible to get a short extension of three days? I want to submit quality work. Thank you very much for your understanding.

Time: ~28 seconds

Sample Situation 2 — Social (Informal)

Quick Comparison: Formal vs Informal Phrases

Function Formal / Informal

Opening

"Good morning…" / "Hello…"

"Hi!" / "Hey!"

Purpose

"I wanted to discuss…"

"So, I just wanted to say…"

Request

"Would it be possible to…"

"Can I…" / "Could you…"

Apology

"I sincerely apologize…"

"I'm really sorry…"

Closing

"Thank you for your time."

"Thanks a lot!"

Scoring Tips for 45–50

Content

  • State the goal clearly in your first 2 sentences .
  • Do not just describe the situation. Do the action—make the request, give the apology, decline the invite.
  • Missing the goal = low content score.

Fluency

  • Speak at a steady, moderate pace.
  • Do not stop for more than 1–2 seconds.
  • If you make a mistake, keep going. Do not correct yourself.

Pronunciation

  • Speak clearly. You do not need a native accent.
  • Pronounce key words correctly (the topic words).

Do NOT

  • Do not memorize a fixed speech. The AI penalizes responses that ignore the specific prompt .
  • Do not use "The situation is about…" and paraphrase the prompt .
  • Do not go silent. A 15-second answer scores poorly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake Fix

Wrong tone (too casual with professor)

Use formal phrases for authority figures

Too short (under 15 seconds)

Aim for 25–35 seconds minimum

Just repeating the prompt

Paraphrase in your own words

Long silence while thinking

Use "So, the thing is…" as a filler

Practice Routine (15 min/day)

1.      Read one situation prompt.

2.      Write 3 keywords only (Who / Goal / Detail).

3.      Speak for 40 seconds using the template.

4.      Record and listen back.

5.      Check: Did I state the goal clearly? Did I use the right tone?

Target: 5 situations per day for one week.
