Present Tense with its four sub- types


 


 Present Tense

A)     Present Tense: The present tense refers to the action or event that takes place or is taking place in the present. It is used to refer to events, actions, and conditions that are happening all the time, or exist now.”

It has found its four sub-types as shown below:

1)      Simple Present Tense: It used to talk about conditions or actions happening right now or habitual actions and occurrences.

Structure: Subject +v1/v5 +object.

Always, often, frequently, usually, occasionally                                        For positive sentence

Never , hardly seldom  rarely, scarcely                                                     For Negative sentence

Every day, night, day, morning, evening, Sunday, week, month, years.

Once, twice, thrice  months years

1.      The Sun rises in the East.

2.      It rains heavily during the monsoons.

3.      The planets revolve around the Sun.

4.      The United States of America’s President stays in the White House.

5.      Bears hibernate during the winter.

8.      Sam always takes Robles avenue while travelling.

9.      The milkman delivers milk cartons every day.

10. The garbage van comes after every two days.

11. Raj eats bread and butter before going to school.

14. Johnny goes to the gym thrice a week.

2) Present Continuous Tense: It is used for actions or events that are happening or developing now.

Structure:

Subject + is, am, are + verb 4 (-ing) +object.

 at the moment, at present, today, tonight, this morning/afternoon/evening, this week/month/year & while.

                                                Time adverbs to remember

•      She is still waiting for you.

•      They are watching movie now.

•      I am reading  a novel at the moment.

3) Present Perfect Tense: The verb used for actions or events that have been completed or have happened in a period of time up to now.

Structure: Subject + has/have verb-3+object.

For example,

  • I have recently visited to the zoo.
  • She has just completed her assignment.
  • They have already finished their assignments.
  • We have not received our meal yet.

9.      I have already completed my assignments.

10. We have not arrived at the station yet.

11. They have recently seen a tiger in Chitwan National Park.

12. It has become easy to speak in English.

4) Present Perfect Continuous Tense: It is used to talk about something that started in the past and is continuing at the present time.

Structure: Subject+ has/have+ been + verb-ing+ object.

For example:

•      They have been playing football.

•      She has been reading a novel.

You can use for/since in the following ways:

For: period of time

Since: point of time

For example,

q  We have been watching this movie for two hours.

q  He has been working in this company since 2020 AD.

Examples

1.      I have been working on this project for a week.

2.      You have been working on this project for a week.

3.      He has been working on this project for a week.

4.      She has been working on this project for a week.

5.      They have been working on this project for a week.

6.      I have been writing articles on different topics since morning.

7.      He has been reading the book for two hours.

8.      They have been playing football for an hour.

9.      She has been finding the dress since morning.

10. He has been studying in the library for three hours.

11. You have been shopping in that market for three hours.

12. I have been singing different kinds of songs, especially modern.

13. I have been listening to melodious songs for an hour.

14. He has been traveling around the world for a month.

15. They have been playing cricket in that field for five hours.

16. The poet has been writing romantic poems for several hours.

17. The lyricist has been writing realistic songs since the beginning of his career.
