 Difference between shall and should

Shall

Use: To express future intention, offers, or suggestions (mostly in formal or British English).

Structure: Subject + shall + base verb

Examples:

  1. shall return tomorrow. (future intention)
  2. Shall we go now? (suggestion)
  3. You shall receive your award soon. (formal promise)

Should

Use: To express advice, obligation, expectation, or possibility (more common and informal).
Structure: Subject + should + base verb

Examples:

  1. You should study daily. (advice)
  2. He should be home by now. (expectation)
  3. We should respect our elders. (moral obligation)

Difference in Simple Terms:

  • "Shall" = will (formal) / suggestion
  • "Should" = advice / what is right or best
