Use of "have to," "has to," and "had to
Use of "have to,"
"has to," and "had to," it helps to know that
they express obligation, necessity, or compulsion (something that is
necessary or required).
In Nepali, they generally translate
to:
- "have to / has to" = "गर्नु पर्छ" (garnu parcha)
or "गर्नु छ" (garnu cha)
– meaning must / need to.
- "had to"
= "गर्नु पर्यो" (garnu paryo)
or "गर्नु पर्थ्यो" (garnu parthyo) – meaning had to do it (past).
The
Golden Rule (Subject-Verb Agreement)
Just like have/has, the rule
depends on the subject:
|
Subject
(विषय)Present (हाल) = गर्नु पर्छ Past
(विगत) = गर्नु पर्यो |
||
|
I / You / We / They |

had to |
|

Important Note: In negative sentences, we use "don't/doesn't have
to" (meaning "not necessary" - गर्नु पर्दैन) and "didn't
have to" (meaning "was not necessary in the past").
