Task 1 Overview

Your goal: Describe and analyze visual data (no opinion, no reasons).

Minimum words: 150
Recommended time: 20 minutes
Scoring Criteria:

·         Task Achievement

·         Coherence and Cohesion

·         Lexical Resource (Vocabulary)

·         Grammatical Range and Accuracy


2. Graphs with Time (Dynamic Graphs)

These show how something changes over time.

Common Types:

·         Line graphs

·         Bar charts (with years)

·         Tables (with years)

·         Multiple line/bar charts with time


Key Features:

·         Describe trends (increase, decrease, fluctuation, stability)

·         Use past/present/future tense depending on the time shown

·         Focus on significant changes, peaks, lows, and patterns


Useful Vocabulary:

Trends Increasing:

·         Rose / Increased / Grew / Climbed / Went up

·         Sharply / Gradually / Steadily / Rapidly / Slightly

Trends Decreasing:

·         Dropped / Declined / Fell / Decreased / Reduced

·         Dramatically / Steadily / Suddenly / Slightly

No Change:

·         Remained stable

·         Stayed constant

·         Did not change

Fluctuation:

·         Fluctuated / Was erratic / Varied / Changed irregularly


Tips for Time-Based Graphs:

1.      Focus on trends, not every point.

2.      Group similar trends (e.g., all rising lines together).

3.      Use comparative and superlative structures.

4.      Use past tense for past years (e.g., 2000–2020).

5.      Use present perfect or future tense for recent/forecast years.


Sample Overview:

Overall, the number of international students rose steadily from 2000 to 2020, while domestic enrollment remained relatively stable.


3. Graphs without Time (Static Graphs)

These compare data at a specific point in time.

Common Types:

·         Pie charts

·         Bar graphs (without years)

·         Tables

·         Maps

·         Process diagrams


Key Features:

·         Focus on comparison and proportion

·         Use present tense if no time is given

·         Group similar/highest/lowest values


Useful Vocabulary:

For Comparison:

·         Is higher/lower than

·         The most/the least

·         More/less than

·         Twice/three times as much as

·         Equal to / the same as

For Pie Charts:

·         The majority of…

·         A small fraction of…

·         Just under/over…

·         Accounted for…


Tips for No-Time Graphs:

1.      Focus on biggest and smallest differences.

2.      Use proportional language (percentages, fractions).

3.      Avoid copying the exact figures for every item.

4.      Group data logically (e.g., by category or value).


Sample Overview:

Overall, the most popular transport mode was cars, while bicycles and walking accounted for the lowest usage.
