What Are Phonemes?

Phonemes are the smallest units of sound in a language that distinguish one word from another.

Example:

·         /p/ in pat vs /b/ in bat – changing the sound changes the meaning, so /p/ and /b/ are phonemes.

Types of Phonemes

There are two main types of phonemes in English:

1.      Consonant Sounds – 24 in total

2.      Vowel Sounds – 20 in total

o    12 Monophthongs (single vowel sounds)

o    8 Diphthongs (combination of two vowel sounds)

Key Nepali Meanings

Voiced (वॉयस्): उच्चारण गर्दा घाँटी कम्पन हुने ध्वनि
