Verb's types with definition

 Definition of Verb

A verb is a word that shows an action, a state, or an occurrence. It is one of the most important parts of a sentence because every complete sentence must have a verb.

1. Action Verbs (Dynamic Verbs)

Definition: Verbs that show physical or mental action.
Examples:

  • She runs every morning.
  • He thinks about his future.

2. Linking Verbs

Definition: Verbs that connect the subject to more information, usually about its condition or identity.
Examples:

  • She is a teacher.
  • The soup tastes delicious.

3. Helping Verbs (Auxiliary Verbs)

Definition: Verbs used with main verbs to show tense, mood, or voice.
Examples:

  • She is reading a book.
  • They have gone to the market.

4. Transitive Verbs

Definition: Verbs that need an object to complete their meaning.
Examples:

  • He bought a car.
  • She wrote a letter.

5. Intransitive Verbs

Definition: Verbs that do not need an object to complete their meaning.
Examples:

  • He sleeps peacefully.
  • The baby cried loudly.

6. Regular Verbs

Definition: Verbs that form their past tense by adding -ed or -d.
Examples:

  • Play → Played
  • Walk → Walked

7. Irregular Verbs

Definition: Verbs that do not follow the regular -ed rule for the past tense.
Examples:

  • Go → Went
  • Eat → Ate

8. Modal Verbs

Definition: Verbs that show ability, possibility, permission, or obligation.
Examples:

  • She can swim.
  • You must study.

9. Stative Verbs

Definition: Verbs that describe a state or condition, not an action.
Examples:

  • I know the answer.
  • She loves music.

10. Phrasal Verbs

Definition: Verbs made of a main verb + one or more particles (prepositions or adverbs).
Examples:

  • Look after the baby.
  • Give up smoking.
