GT IELTS Formal Letters, Semi-Formal Letters, Informal Letters

 

1. Formal Letters (to companies, institutions, or officials)

1.      You recently bought a laptop from an online store, but it arrived damaged. Write a letter to the company requesting a replacement.

2.      You saw an advertisement for a part-time job at a local supermarket. Write a letter applying for the job.

3.      You are moving to a new city and need to close your bank account. Write a letter to the bank manager.

4.      You stayed at a hotel during your vacation, but you were not satisfied with the service. Write a letter of complaint to the hotel manager.

5.      You have completed a course in a college, and you would like to get your course completion certificate. Write a letter to the college administration.


2. Semi-Formal Letters (to people you know, but not very personally: e.g., neighbors, colleagues, landlords, teachers)

1.      Your neighbor is making a lot of noise at night. Write a letter to your neighbor explaining the problem and suggesting a solution.

2.      You borrowed a book from your colleague but lost it. Write a letter of apology and offer to replace it.

3.      You are going to organize a farewell party for a colleague. Write a letter to another colleague inviting them to the event.

4.      You recently moved into a rented apartment and found some problems with it. Write a letter to your landlord requesting repairs.

5.      You cannot attend a training session arranged by your company. Write a letter to your manager explaining the reason and suggesting an alternative.


3. Informal Letters (to friends or family)

1.      You have recently moved to a new house. Write a letter to your friend describing your new home.

2.      You borrowed money from a close friend but haven’t been able to return it yet. Write a letter explaining the situation and promising repayment.

3.      A friend from another country is planning to visit your hometown. Write a letter suggesting places to visit and things to do.

4.      Your cousin has invited you to their wedding, but you cannot attend. Write a letter apologizing and explaining why.

5.      You have recently started a new hobby. Write a letter to your friend describing the hobby and inviting them to join you.
