 IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Common Topics & Cue Card Ideas


1. Describe a Person

·         Examples: family member, friend, teacher, famous person

·         Sub-points:

o    Who this person is

o    How you know them

o    What they are like (personality/appearance)

o    Why you admire or like them

Sample Topics:

·         Describe your best friend.

·         Describe a teacher who influenced you.

·         Describe a famous person you would like to meet.


2. Describe a Place

·         Examples: hometown, country, holiday destination, park

·         Sub-points:

o    Where it is

o    When you went there or visit often

o    What it looks like / what activities are there

o    Why it is memorable / enjoyable

Sample Topics:

·         Describe your hometown.

·         Describe a place you would like to visit.

·         Describe a park or garden you enjoy visiting.


3. Describe an Event / Occasion

·         Examples: birthday, wedding, festival, cultural event

·         Sub-points:

o    What the event was

o    When and where it happened

o    Who was there

o    Why it was important or memorable

Sample Topics:

·         Describe a memorable birthday.

·         Describe a festival you enjoy celebrating.

·         Describe an event you attended recently.


4. Describe an Object / Thing

·         Examples: gift, gadget, souvenir, piece of art

·         Sub-points:

o    What it is

o    When you got it / bought it

o    How you use it

o    Why it is special or important

·         Describe a gift you received.

·         Describe a favorite gadget.

·         Describe something you own that is important to you.


5. Describe an Activity / Experience

·         Examples: hobby, sport, volunteering, learning experience

o    When and how you do it

o    Who participates with you

o    How you feel about it / why it is enjoyable

·         Describe a hobby you enjoy.

·         Describe a sport you like playing or watching.

6. Describe a Journey / Travel Experience

·         Sub-points:

o    Where you went

o    How you traveled

o    Who you went with

o    What you enjoyed or learned

Sample Topics:

·         Describe a city or country you visited recently.


7. Describe a Story / Book / Film

o    Who the main characters are

o    What happens in it

o    Why you like it / why it is memorable

9. Describe a Habit / Routine

o    Who is involved (if applicable)

10. Describe a Technology / Invention

o    What it is

o    Who uses it

o    Why it is useful / important
