1. Understand the Question

·         You will be given two maps of the same place from different times (past and present, or present and future plan).

·         Your task: describe changes. Focus on what has changed, disappeared, or been added.

Tip: Identify major changes first (buildings, roads, parks, rivers, etc.), then describe smaller changes.


2. Useful Vocabulary for Map Changes

4. Sentence Structures

·         Simple description:

o    “A new shopping center has been built in the north of the town.”

o    “The park has been removed and replaced by a car park.”

·         Comparison:

o    “While the river ran through the eastern part of the town in 1990, it is now surrounded by residential buildings.”

·         Change of use:

o    “The old factory has been converted into a library.”

·         Summary:

o    “Overall, the town has seen major urban development, with new buildings replacing open spaces.”


5. Tips for Band 8+

1.      Group changes logically: describe north to south, west to east, or type of change (e.g., residential, commercial, recreational).

2.      Avoid repeating words: use synonyms for built, removed, replaced, developed.

3.      Include prepositions for accuracy: “in the north of,” “next to,” “opposite.”

4.      Write an overview/summary: always give a general statement about the changes.

5.      Use past tense and passive voice:

o    “A bridge was constructed in 2010.”

o    “The old school was demolished and replaced by a hospital.”

4. Useful Sentence Structures

1.      Simple description of change:

2.      Comparison:

o    “The old road in the south has been widened, whereas the northern road remains unchanged.”

3.      Change of use:

o    “The old warehouse has been transformed into a residential complex.”

4.      Location & Direction:

o    “The school is located adjacent to the main road, with a playground behind it.”

o    “A new bridge has been constructed in the northern part of the town.”

5.      Summary / Overview:

5. Quick Tips for IELTS Maps

1.      Group changes logically:

o    By direction: north → south, east → west

o    By type: residential, commercial, recreational

2.      Use a variety of verbs and phrases: avoid repetition like “built” and “added” multiple times.

3.      Always include a general overview/summary.

4.      Use past tense for changes and passive voice where possible:

o    “The old market was replaced by a supermarket.”

5.      Prepositions are important: in, next to, behind, opposite, along.
