1. Definition of a Press Release

A press release is an official written statement given to newspapers, TV, radio, websites, and journalists to announce news or important information to the public.

It is used by:

·         Schools/colleges

·         NGOs

·         Events/organizers

·         Celebrities/public figures

A press release provides:

·         What happened

·         When it happened

·         Where it happened

·         Who was involved

·         Why it matters

·         What will happen next

It must be short, factual, and news-focused.


2. Format of a Press Release

A standard press release contains the following sections:


A. Headline (Title)

·         Short, clear, and newsworthy

·         Written like a newspaper headline

Example:

B. Dateline

·         Includes place and date

C. Lead Paragraph

The most important part. It answers the 5Ws & 1H:

·         What happened?

·         Where did it happen?

·         Why is it important?

·         How it happened?

This paragraph must be brief and factual.


D. Body (Supporting Details)

·         Background information

·         Quotes from officials, organizers, or experts

·         Significance of the event

·         Additional explanations

Include facts, statistics, and statements.


E. Conclusion

·         What will happen next

·         Contact details

·         Information for follow-up

·         Closing note
