1. Purpose of Mains

·         The Mains Exam evaluates a candidate’s in-depth understanding, analytical skills, and writing ability.

·         Marks obtained in Mains count towards final ranking along with the Interview.

·         Qualifying in Prelims is mandatory to appear in Mains.

3. Detailed Syllabus & Question Types

Paper A – Indian Language

·         Tests comprehension, grammar, and essay writing in the chosen language.

·         Type of Questions: Translation, comprehension, précis writing, essay.

Sample Question:

·         Write a précis of a given passage of 300 words in your chosen language.


Paper B – English

·         Tests English comprehension, grammar, précis, and essay writing.

·         Type of Questions: Reading comprehension, grammar exercises, essay.

Sample Question:

·         Write an essay on: “Digital India – Opportunities and Challenges”


Paper I – Essay Paper

·         Candidates write 2 essays, usually on social, economic, or political topics.

·         Marks: 250, Duration: 3 hours

·         Internal security, disaster management

Paper V – GS Paper IV: Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude

·         Attitude, probity, integrity

·         “You are a District Collector. A local official is found misusing public funds. How would you handle the situation?”


Paper VI & VII – Optional Papers

·         Two papers of 250 marks each

·         Focus: In-depth knowledge of the chosen subject
