Definition of Word Class (Parts of Speech)
Word class (also called parts of speech) refers
to the category into which a word is placed according to its function in
a sentence.
In English grammar, every word belongs to a
particular class depending on what job it performs.
For example:
In the sentence:
Ram runs quickly.
- Ram → Noun
(name of a person)
- runs → Verb
(shows action)
- quickly → Adverb (describes
how he runs)
So, word classes
help us understand how words work together to make meaningful sentences.
