Topic 5

ATI TEAS Version 7 English & Language Usage Section

It includes definitions, uses, examples, and 50 practice questions with an answer key.

1. Definitions & Key Concepts

Sentence Fragment

A fragment is an incomplete sentence. It lacks a subject, a verb, or a complete thought. It often begins with a subordinating word (because, although, since) or is a dependent clause standing alone.

TEAS Tip: If the “sentence” leaves you asking “who?” or “what happened?” it’s likely a fragment.

Run-on Sentence

A run-on occurs when two or more independent clauses (complete sentences) are joined incorrectly without proper punctuation or conjunction.

  • Fused sentence: No punctuation between clauses.
❌ Wrong: She studied hard she passed the exam.
  • Comma splice: Only a comma separates two independent clauses.
❌ Wrong: She studied hard, she passed the exam.

Correct Sentence

A complete sentence has:

  • A subject (who/what the sentence is about)
  • A predicate (verb + what the subject does/is)
  • A complete thought (can stand alone)

Also uses proper punctuation and conjunctions (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) or subordinators correctly.
