 Day 32md

ATI TEAS Version 7 Mechanics (Capitalization, Spelling, Punctuation) with practice questions styled like the exam.

1. Capitalization Rules (TEAS Focus)

Capitalize:

  • Proper nouns: specific people, places, organizations (Dr. Smith, Paris, World Health Organization)
  • Titles before names: President Biden, Professor Lee
  • Days, months, holidays (but not seasons: spring, summer)
  • First word of a sentence or quoted sentence
  • Major words in titles (except short prepositions/conjunctions: of, and, the unless first/last)
  • Languages, nationalities, religions (English, Hispanic, Islam)

Common TEAS trap: Do not capitalize family titles when preceded by a possessive (my mom, his aunt) — but Hi, Mom (direct address) is capitalized.

2. Common Spelling Errors (TEAS Frequent)

Correct

Incorrect

accommodate

accomodate

separate

seperate

definitely

definately

occurrence

occurance

privilege

privelege

necessary

neccessary

embarrass

embarass

maintenance

maintainance

receive

recieve (i before e except after c, or as in neighbor/weigh)

their/there/they’re

mixing them up

its (possessive) / it’s (it is)

mixing them up

Strategy: Read the sentence aloud in your head; if a word sounds wrong, check common misspellings.

3. Punctuation Rules

Commas (,)

  • Between items in a series (apples, bananas, and oranges) — TEAS usually uses Oxford comma.
  • After introductory phrases (After the game, we left).
  • Around nonessential clauses (My teacher, who is from Texas, loves barbecue).
  • Before and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet when joining two complete sentences.
  • In dates/places (July 4, 1776; Dallas, Texas).

Semicolons (;)

  • Join two related complete sentences without a conjunction (She loves coffee; he prefers tea).
  • Separate complex list items (Dallas, Texas; Paris, France; Tokyo, Japan).

Quotation Marks (" ")

  • Direct quotes: She said, “I’m tired.”
  • Periods/commas go inside closing quotes (“Hello,” she said.)
  • Colons/semicolons go outside.
  • Question marks: inside if part of quote; outside if not (Did he say, “Leave”? vs. He asked, “Are you leaving?”)
