word relationships.
Why
Synonyms & Antonyms Matter on the TEAS
The TEAS tests your ability to:
- Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words using context
clues.
- Recognize subtle differences in word meanings
(connotation, intensity, formality).
- Identify correct word pairs in analogies or sentence
completion.
Common TEAS traps: Words that look similar but differ in meaning (e.g.,
affect/effect), or synonyms that are not interchangeable in context (e.g.,
cheap vs. inexpensive).
Synonyms: Words with Similar Meanings
Definition: Synonyms are different words that share the same or nearly
the same meaning.

TEAS Test-Taking Tips for Synonyms & Antonyms
- Use context clues — The sentence around the word often
gives hints (e.g., unlike, however, similarly).
- Watch for prefixes/suffixes — un-, in-, non-,
-less often indicate antonyms of the root.
- Eliminate obvious mismatches — If a word clearly
doesn’t fit, remove it first.
- For analogies, identify the relationship before looking
at options.
- Beware of “distractor” synonyms — Two options may seem
correct, but one fits the tone or intensity better.
