Crucial Methods That Actually Increase Score

Method 1: Master the "Fluency First" Rule

What PTE values most:

Natural, smooth speech > Perfect grammar > Correct content

How to apply:

  • Never stop mid-sentence – even if you make a mistake
  • Keep speaking at the same rhythm – no sudden pauses
  • If you forget a word, say something (but not "um" – see below)

Example mistake:

❌ "The professor said... uh... that the... um... exam is..." (broken fluency)
✅ "The professor said that the exam is difficult for many students." (smooth, even if slightly wrong)

Method 2: Use "Connected Speech" (Like Native Speakers)

Native speakers don't pronounce every word separately. They link sounds.

Practice these common links:

Written

Said as

Example

I am

"I'm"

I'm going (not "I am")

going to

"gonna"

We're gonna leave (informal – use in Retell Lecture only)

want to

"wanna"

I wanna go (informal)

kind of

"kinda"

It's kinda hard

because

"cuz"

Cuz it's late

For Read Aloud & Repeat Sentence (formal tasks):

Use slight linking but keep words clear: "What is (whatiz) your name?"

Method 3: The 3-Second Rule (Never Be Silent)

The microphone closes after 3 seconds of silence.

What to do:

  • Start speaking within 1-2 seconds after the beep
  • If you freeze, say the last word you remember and continue
  • If you have nothing, say "The answer is..." (better than silence)

For Describe Image / Retell Lecture:

If you finish early, don't stop. Repeat your last sentence or say:
"In conclusion, this image shows important information."

Method 4: Control Your Breathing

  • Deep breath before the beep
  • Speak at 120-140 words per minute (normal speed)
  • Pause briefly at commas and periods (0.5 seconds)
  • Never gasp for air mid-sentence

Method 5: The "Shadowing" Daily Drill (Most Powerful)

Shadowing = listening and repeating simultaneously with a 0.5–1 second delay.

How to practice:

  • Find a 30-second English audio (BBC, TED Talk)
  • Listen once
  • Play again and repeat after each phrase
  • Record and compare

10 minutes daily for 2 weeks = massive improvement.

Task-Specific Crucial Tips

1. Read Aloud

Do:

  • Look ahead while reading
  • Use natural intonation
  • Emphasize important words
  • Pause at punctuation

Don't:

  • Stop mid-sentence
  • Read word-by-word

Chunking Example:

"The university / has announced / that all lectures / will be recorded."

2. Repeat Sentence

Do:

  • Close your eyes
  • Focus on first 3–4 words
  • Copy intonation
  • Skip missing words and continue

Don't:

  • Try to write sentence
  • Stop speaking

Life-saving trick:

If you remember only 50%, say it confidently.

Example:
"Heard: The economics lecture scheduled for Thursday has been moved..."
You: "The economics lecture has been moved"

3. Describe Image (Most Scored Task)

Template:

"This image shows [main topic]. According to the graph, the highest number is [max value]. The lowest number is [min value]. In conclusion, there is a significant difference between [comparison]."

Example:

"This image shows population growth in Nepal from 2000 to 2020..."

Crucial method:

Never stop speaking. Repeat or rephrase if needed.

4. Retell Lecture

Note-taking (5–7 keywords only):

solar, panels, renewable, cost down, government, subsidies, future

Template:

"The lecture was about [topic]. First, [point 1]. Second, [point 2]. Third, [point 3]. In conclusion, [summary]."

5. Answer Short Question

  • Answer in 1–3 words
  • No fluency needed

Examples:

What is opposite of expensive? → Cheap
Who fixes teeth? → Dentist
Which month after September? → October
Main source of light? → The sun

Crucial tip:

If unsure, guess.
