PTE Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks (Dropdown) and Reading: Drag & Drop (Fill the Blanks)

Mastering collocations is your biggest weapon.

In PTE, examiners don't just test grammar; they test natural word partnerships (words that frequently go together in English). If you know the right collocation, you can answer a blank in 2 seconds without even reading the whole sentence.

Here is a breakdown of the 6 main types of PTE collocations with Nepali meanings and high-frequency PTE examples.

1. Adjective + Noun (विशेषण + संज्ञा)

🧠 PTE Strategy for Fill in the Blanks Using Collocations:

1. Read the sentence and identify the blank.

Look at the word immediately before and immediately after the blank.

2. Ask yourself:

"What word naturally partners with this?"

For example, if you see:

to ... a role

you immediately think of:

play

3. Eliminate wrong answers:

In dropdown boxes, PTE often gives you 4 options. Usually, 1–2 options are grammatically correct, but only 1 makes a natural collocation pair.

4. Practice "Chunking":

Don't read word-by-word. Read the sentence in "chunks."

Your brain will recognize the collocation automatically.

For example:

"...to pay close ... to" = attention

💡 How to Review These for Maximum PTE Benefit

For Dropdowns (Sets 1–5):

Cover the options and try to guess the word just by looking at the “partner word” next to the blank.

For Drag & Drop (Sets 6–10):

Notice how the extra words (distractors) are usually similar in meaning, such as:

provide / give / offer

PTE uses these to test whether you know the exact natural collocation.

Daily Practice:

Read the sentences aloud with the correct answers to build your “native ear” for the test day.

Good luck!

🎯 Final Strategic Advice for PTE

In Dropdown Questions (Sets 11–20):

Always read the entire sentence. The missing word's “partner” is usually right beside it.

For example:

______ a roleplay

______ awarenessraise

In Drag & Drop Questions (Sets 21–30):

PTE often gives you extra words that are similar in meaning to confuse you, such as:

provide / offer / give

The correct answer is the one that forms the most natural, fixed collocation in that specific sentence.

Review Strategy:

Review these 20 sets every 2 days. Read the correct sentences aloud with the Nepali meanings in your mind.

This builds the “muscle memory” you need for exam day.
