The rapid development was
important. → adjective + noun

the antecedent—the noun the

Here, their refers to researchers, but were
requires a plural subject. Therefore:

PTE identification tricks
The strongest
pattern is:

Examples
Verb:

Adjective:

were extremely significant.
Adverb:
The economy
grew remarkably quickly.
The famous PTE clue: -LY
Many adverbs
end in -ly:
- significantly
- effectively
- rapidly
- carefully
- recently
- generally
- approximately
But don't use:
-ly = always adverb
because some
adjectives end in -ly:
- friendly
- lovely
- costly
- likely
- lively
- elderly
Example
The economy

A. significant
B. significance

are often tested through collocations,
so memorization is extremely useful.

🔥 PTE strategy
Don't ask only:
“Which
preposition is grammatically possible?”
Ask:
“Which preposition naturally goes with this word?”
7. CONJUNCTION — Connecting Word
Definition: A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses.
Coordinating conjunctions — FANBOYS
For

Subordinating conjunctions
- although
- though
- because
- while
- whereas
- since
- unless
- if
- when
- before
- after

⚠️ Very important correction to your example
You wrote:
______ the high
cost of living, many young people are moving to suburban areas.
You listed Because as the answer.
That is
incorrect unless a clause follows.
❌ Because the
high cost of living, ...
Correct:
Because of
the high cost of living, many young people are moving...
Or:
Because
the cost of living is high, many young people are moving...
Remember:
Because + clause
Because the cost is high, ...
Because of + noun/noun phrase
Because of the high cost, ...
Although + clause
Although the cost is high, ...
Despite/In spite of + noun/-ing
Despite the high cost, ...
Despite being expensive, ...
This
distinction is very useful for PTE Fill
in the Blanks.
8. INTERJECTION — Emotion Word
Definition: An interjection expresses sudden emotion, reaction, or feeling.
Examples:
- Oh!
- Wow!
- Ah!
- Ouch!
- Hey!
- Oops!
PTE importance
This is the least important of the eight parts of
speech for academic Reading & Writing tasks.
PTE academic
texts are formal, so you are much more likely to need:
Noun → Pronoun → Verb → Adjective → Adverb →
Preposition → Conjunction
than an
interjection.

🧠 The 5-Second PTE Method
When you see
four options like:
develop /
development / developed / developing
Don't
immediately translate the sentence.
Ask these questions:
1. What word class is needed?
Noun? Verb? Adjective? Adverb?
2. What grammar pattern surrounds the blank?
to +
___?
the +
adjective + ___?
___ +
noun?
3. Is there a tense clue?
yesterday, last year, currently, since, already, etc.
4. Is there a collocation?
focus on, depend on, responsible for, etc.
5. Finally, check meaning.
🔥 Golden principle
Grammar first → Word form second → Collocation third →
Meaning last.
This approach is especially effective when the four
PTE options are different forms of the same
root word.
