5 High-Quality PTE Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks Practice Sets

5 High-Quality PTE Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks Practice Sets

I have designed these to specifically test the Parts of Speech rules we just discussed.

How to use these: For each blank, look at the surrounding words. Ask yourself: Do I need a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb? Then use the suffixes (-tion, -ly, -ive, etc.) to eliminate wrong answers immediately.

SET 1: Focus on NOUNS vs. VERBS

(Look for articles like "a/an/the" before the blank, or subjects performing actions).

Passage:

The rapid ______ (1) of remote working has led to a significant ______ (2) in office rental prices across major cities. Many companies are now ______ (3) their long-term leases to reduce overhead costs. However, this transition requires careful ______ (4) to ensure employee productivity remains high.

Options:

1.      A) Grow B) Growth C) Growing D) Grown

2.      A) Decline B) Declining C) Declined D) Declines

3.      A) Termination B) Terminate C) Terminating D) Terminated

4.      A) Plan B) Planned C) Planning D) Plans

ANSWERS & EXPLANATIONS (Set 1):

1.      B) GrowthWhy? "The rapid ______" – The article "The" and the adjective "rapid" need a NOUN to follow. The suffix -th makes it a noun.

2.      A) DeclineWhy? "a significant ______" – The article "a" and the adjective "significant" need a NOUN.

3.      C) TerminatingWhy? "are now ______" – The auxiliary verb "are" needs a present participle (verb + ing) to form the continuous tense.

4.      C) PlanningWhy? "requires careful ______" – The adjective "careful" needs a NOUN. (Note: "Planning" acts as a noun here, known as a gerund).

SET 2: Focus on ADJECTIVES vs. ADVERBS

(Look for nouns after the blank for adjectives; look for verbs before the blank or adjectives after the blank for adverbs).

Passage:

The new economic policy was ______ (1) designed to stabilize the currency. Early results show a ______ (2) improvement in export figures. However, some analysts argue that the changes are too ______ (3) to have a lasting impact. The government remains ______ (4) optimistic about the future outlook.

Options:

1.      A) Care B) Careful C) Carefully D) Carefulness

2.      A) Significance B) Significant C) Significantly D) Signify

3.      A) Minor B) Minority C) Minorly D) Minoring

4.      A) Cautious B) Cautiously C) Caution D) Cautiousness

ANSWERS & EXPLANATIONS (Set 2):

1.      C) CarefullyWhy? The blank comes after the verb "was" and before the verb "designed". It modifies the verb "designed" (telling how it was designed). We need an ADVERB (-ly).

2.      B) SignificantWhy? The blank is between the article "a" and the noun "improvement". It describes the noun. We need an ADJECTIVE (-ant).

3.      A) MinorWhy? The blank comes after the verb "are" and before the infinitive "to have". It describes the noun "changes" (which is implied). We need an ADJECTIVE.

4.      B) CautiouslyWhy? The blank comes before the adjective "optimistic". It modifies the adjective (telling how optimistic). We need an ADVERB (-ly).

SET 3: Focus on SUFFIXES (Identifying by Word Endings)

(Don't read the whole sentence; just look at the endings to determine the part of speech).

Passage:

The ______ (1) of the university's research program has attracted global ______ (2). The committee is currently ______ (3) the data from the latest experiment. They hope to find a ______ (4) solution to the ongoing environmental crisis.

Options:

1.      A) Excellent B) Excel C) Excellence D) Excellently

2.      A) Recognize B) Recognizable C) Recognizably D) Recognition

3.      A) Analysis B) Analytical C) Analyze D) Analyzing

4.      A) Sustain B) Sustainable C) Sustainability D) Sustainably

ANSWERS & EXPLANATIONS (Set 3):

1.      C) ExcellenceWhy? The blank is at the start before "of". The article "The" needs a NOUN. The suffix -ence is a noun ending.

2.      D) RecognitionWhy? The blank follows the adjective "global". Adjectives modify NOUNS. The suffix -tion is a noun ending.

3.      D) AnalyzingWhy? The blank follows the auxiliary verb "is currently". "Currently" tells you it's happening now, so you need a present participle (verb). The suffix -ing gives it away.

4.      B) SustainableWhy? The blank sits between the article "a" and the noun "solution". It describes the noun. The suffix -able is an adjective ending.

SET 4: Focus on CONJUNCTIONS vs. PREPOSITIONS

(Look for the comma and the structure of the clauses).

Passage:

Global temperatures are rising steadily, ______ (1) many coastal cities are facing severe flooding risks. ______ (2) the increasing frequency of natural disasters, governments are investing heavily in infrastructure. Some projects have been delayed, ______ (3) a lack of funding. The situation remains critical, ______ (4) international cooperation has improved significantly.

2.      A) Despite B) Because C) Although D) Due to

3.      A) Because B) Since C) Due to D) Although

4.      A) Or B) Yet C) For D) Nor

ANSWERS & EXPLANATIONS (Set 4):

1.      A) AndWhy? The comma connects two complete sentences (Rising... cities are facing). They are positive/neutral ideas happening together, so we need a coordinating conjunction And.

2.      D) Due toWhy? Look at the blank. It is followed by a noun phrase ("the increasing frequency..."). If you put "Because" or "Although", you need a full clause (subject + verb). Since there is no verb after the blank, you need a PREPOSITION ("Due to").

3.      C) Due toWhy? Again, the blank is followed by a noun phrase ("a lack of funding"). It shows the reason. "Because" and "Since" need full clauses. You need a PREPOSITION.

4.      B) YetWhy? The first part says "situation remains critical" (negative), and the second says "cooperation has improved" (positive). This is a contrast. Yet means "but" and is used to show this unexpected contrast.

SET 5: Full Academic Text (Mixed Challenge)

(A combination of Nouns, Adjectives, Verbs, and Adverbs to test everything).

Passage:

In recent years, the ______ (1) of digital currencies has become a highly debated topic. While some experts view them as a ______ (2) innovation, others warn about their extreme volatility. 3.      A) Address B) Addresses C) Addressed D) Addressing

4.      A) Slow B) Slowness C) Slowly D) Slower

ANSWERS & EXPLANATIONS (Set 5):

1.      C) EmergenceWhy? "The ______ of" – The article "The" and the preposition "of" signal that we need a NOUN to be the subject of the sentence. Suffix -ence = noun.

2.      B) RevolutionaryWhy? The blank sits between the article "a" and the noun "innovation". It describes the noun. Suffix -ary = adjective here.

3.      A) AddressWhy? The blank follows the infinitive marker "To". When you have "To + [blank]", it must always be the base form of the VERB.

4.      C) SlowlyWhy? The blank comes after the verb "implemented". It tells us how they are implemented. We need an ADVERB to modify the verb. Suffix -ly = adverb.

10 More High-Quality PTE Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks Practice Sets
