PTE Answer Short Question: 45–50 Score Strategy
Why
This Works for 45–50
Answer Short Question (ASQ) is the easiest
task to score points on PTE — but only if you understand what it actually
tests.
|
Criteria |
What You Actually Need |
|
Content |
Say the correct word or short
phrase |
|
Oral Fluency |
NOT scored — don't worry about it |
|
Pronunciation |
Only needs to be clear enough for
the machine to recognize |
Critical rule: This task is scored 1 point for correct, 0 for incorrect.
There is no partial credit and no penalty for guessing. Your Oral
Fluency and Pronunciation are not graded here — the point goes to your Listening
score.
Timing: You have 10 seconds to answer. If you pause for more
than 3 seconds, the recording stops automatically.
The
Simple Strategy
Hear
the question → Grab the key noun → Say the word → Stop.
That's it. Nothing before it. Nothing after it. Just the word.
The
Golden Rules for 45–50
Rule
1: One Word is Enough — Don't Build Sentences
This is the single biggest
mistake students make. They try to answer in complete sentences, which
wastes time and increases the chance of errors.
|
Question |
Wrong (Long Sentence) |
Right (Brief) |
|
"What do you call a person
who flies an aircraft?" |
"Umm, the person who flies an
aircraft is called a pilot." |
"A pilot." or just "Pilot." |
|
"What instrument measures
temperature?" |
"The instrument that measures
temperature is a thermometer." |
"Thermometer." |
Extra words earn zero additional
marks. A single correct word scores full points.
Rule
2: Say It Immediately — Don't Hesitate
Once the recording box appears, speak
right away. The longer you wait, the more you doubt yourself.
- If the word comes to you, say it instantly
- Don't second-guess your first instinct
- Don't wait for the countdown to finish — answer and
move on
Rule
3: Always Guess — Never Stay Silent
There is no penalty for a wrong
answer. Silence scores 0 anyway. So always say something.
If you don't know the answer:
- Repeat a key noun from the question — this shows you understood the topic
- Say your best guess word
- The guess is free — silence is also 0, so guessing
costs nothing
Catchy
Note-Making Method (Mental, Not Written)
You don't get paper for this task.
Your "notes" are mental keyword grabs.
While listening, catch these three
things:
|
What to Catch |
Why It Matters |
|
Question word (What/Where/Who/How many) |
Tells you the answer type |
|
Key noun (the object being described) |
Tells you what domain the answer
is in |
|
Definition or clue phrase |
Confirms your guess |
Example:
Question: "What do we call a
person who fixes cars?"
·
Question word: What
·
Key noun: person who fixes
cars
·
Clue: repairs vehicles → mechanic

Scoring
Tips for 45–50
Content
- One word is the target. Two or three words max.
- If the answer is a proper noun (name of a city,
person), say it clearly.
- For numbers, say the number directly: "Seven"
not "Seven days" unless the question requires it.
Pronunciation
- Speak clearly and at normal volume. A mumbled word may not be recognized.
- Finish the last consonant — words like "mechanic,"
"dentist," and "thermometer" often get cut off.
- You do not need a native accent. You need the
machine to hear the word.
Do
NOT
- Do not use filler words like "Umm," "Well," or "I
think".
- Do not explain
your answer. There is no elaboration credit.
- Do not panic if you miss a question. One bad answer can affect the next one if you don't
reset. Breathe and move on.

Mistakes to Avoid
|

|
Answering in a full sentence |
Say only the word |
|
Waiting too long to think |
Answer immediately; a guess is
free |
|

Practice
Routine (10 Minutes/Day)
|
Day |
Task |
|
Day 1–2 |
Build topic lists: 10 words each
for jobs, places, science, body, objects |
|
Day 3–5 |
20 questions/day — answer out
loud within 1 second |
|
Day 6–7 |
30 questions/day — record
yourself, check if answers are clear |
|
Day 8–9 |
Focus on your weak categories
(numbers? professions? science?) |
|
Day 10 |
Full mock: 5–6 questions
back-to-back, no breaks |
Target: 30–50 questions per day in the final week.
Final
Reminder
ASQ is free points — if you
don't overthink it. Say the word. Say it clearly. Say it immediately. Then
forget it and focus on the next question. That's all this task requires.
