Past Tense (भूत काल) PTE Grammar

The past tense is a verb tense used to describe actions that happened or were completed in the past. In Nepali, it is called भूत काल (Bhoot Kaal).

There are four types of past tense:


1. Simple Past Tense (सामान्य भूत काल)

Structure:

  • Affirmative: Subject + V2 (past form) + Object
  • Negative: Subject + did + not + V1 + Object
  • Question: Did + Subject + V1 + Object?

Uses:

1.      To express completed actions in the past (विगतमा सकिएको काम)

2.      To express a series of past events (विगतका घटनाहरूको शृंखला)

3.      To express past habits (विगतको बानी)

4.      To express past states or feelings (विगतको अवस्था)

5.      To express actions with definite past time (निश्चित विगत समय)

6.      In conditional sentences (सर्तात्मक वाक्य)

Time Adverbs: yesterday, last night, last week, last month, last year, ago, then, once, in 1990, when, at that time

Examples (English – Nepali):

1.      I went to school yesterday. – म हिजो विद्यालय गएँ।

2.      She read a book last night. – उनले हिजो राति किताब पढिन्।

3.      They played football yesterday. – उनीहरू हिजो फुटबल खेले।

4.      He did not like tea before. – उसलाई पहिले चिया मन पर्दैनथ्यो।

5.      Did you speak Nepali? – तिमीले नेपाली बोल्यौ?

6.      Water boiled quickly. – पानी छिटो उमाल्यो।


2. Past Continuous Tense (अपूर्ण/चालु भूत काल)

Structure:

  • Affirmative: Subject + was/were + V1+ing + Object
  • Negative: Subject + was/were + not + V1+ing + Object
  • Question: Was/Were + Subject + V1+ing + Object?

Uses:

1.      To express actions happening at a specific time in the past (विगतको निश्चित समयमा भइरहेको काम)

2.      To express two simultaneous past actions (दुई विगत कामहरू सँगै)

3.      To express an action interrupted by another (बीचमा रोकिएको काम)

4.      To set the scene in a story (कथाको पृष्ठभूमि)

5.      To express repeated past actions with "always" (दोहोरिने विगत बानी)

6.      To express temporary past situations (अस्थायी विगत अवस्था)

Time Adverbs: while, when, at that moment, at 5 o'clock yesterday, all day yesterday, at that time

Examples (English – Nepali):

1.      I was writing a letter at 7 pm. – म बेलुका ७ बजे चिठी लेख्दै थिएँ।

2.      She was cooking food. – उनी खाना पकाउँदै थिइन्।

3.      They were playing in the garden. – उनीहरू बगैंचामा खेल्दै थिए।

4.      He was not studying at that moment. – ऊ त्यो क्षणमा पढ्दै थिएन।

5.      Were you listening to me? – तिमी मेरो कुरा सुन्दै थियौ?

6.      The children were sleeping then. – बच्चाहरू त्यतिबेला सुत्दै थिए।


3. Past Perfect Tense (पूर्ण भूत काल)

Structure:

  • Affirmative: Subject + had + V3 (past participle) + Object
  • Negative: Subject + had + not + V3 + Object
  • Question: Had + Subject + V3 + Object?

Uses:

1.      To express an action completed before another past action (अर्को विगत कामभन्दा पहिले सकिएको काम)

2.      To express actions with "before" and "after" (before/after सँग)

3.      To express past experiences up to a point (विगतको अनुभव)

4.      To express unfulfilled past wishes (पूरा नभएको विगत इच्छा)

5.      To express reported speech (अप्रत्यक्ष भाषण)

6.      To express actions with "by the time" (by the time सँग)

Time Adverbs: already, yet, just, never, ever, before, after, by the time, until then, previously

Examples (English – Nepali):

1.      I had finished my homework before dinner. – मैले बेलुकाको खानाभन्दा पहिले गृहकार्य सकें।

2.      She had visited Pokhara before. – उनले पहिले पोखरा घुमेकी थिइन्।

3.      They had lived here for ten years. – उनीहरू यहाँ दस वर्ष बसेका थिए।

4.      He had not eaten before leaving. – ऊ जानुभन्दा पहिले खाएको थिएन।

5.      Had you ever seen a tiger? – तिमीले कहिल्यै बाघ देखेका थियौ?

6.      We had just arrived when it rained. – पानी पर्दा हामी भर्खरै आइपुगेका थियौं।


4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense (पूर्ण अपूर्ण भूत काल)

Structure:

  • Affirmative: Subject + had + been + V1+ing + Object + since/for
  • Negative: Subject + had + not + been + V1+ing + Object + since/for
  • Question: Had + Subject + been + V1+ing + Object + since/for?

Uses:

1.      To express actions continuing up to a point in the past (विगतको समयसम्म जारी काम)

2.      To express duration of a past action (विगत कामको अवधि)

3.      To express cause of a past result (विगत परिणामको कारण)

4.      To express repeated past actions over time (समयसम्म दोहोरिने विगत काम)

5.      To express temporary past habits (अस्थायी विगत बानी)

6.      To emphasize the length of time with "how long" (कति समयदेखि भन्ने जोड)

Time Adverbs: since, for, all day, all morning, all week, how long, before, until then

Examples (English – Nepali):

1.      I had been reading since morning. – म बिहानदेखि पढ्दै थिएँ।

2.      She had been working there for five years. – उनी त्यहाँ पाँच वर्षदेखि काम गर्दै थिइन्।

3.      They had been playing for two hours. – उनीहरू दुई घण्टादेखि खेल्दै थिए।

4.      He had not been feeling well before that. – त्योभन्दा पहिले ऊ स्वस्थ महसुस गर्दै थिएन।

5.      Had you been waiting long? – तिमी लामो समयदेखि कुर्दै थियौ?

6.      It had been raining all day. – दिनभरि पानी पर्दै थियो।

Nepali Example

मैले भात खाएँ।

Note: In Nepali, the past tense forms change according to gender (लिङ्ग), number (वचन), and honorific levels (आदरसूचक स्तर). For example:

  • म गएँ (I went – first person)
  • तिमी गयौ (You went – informal)
  • तपाईं जानुभयो (You went – formal)
  • ऊ गयो (He went)
  • उनी गइन् (She went)
  • उनीहरू गए (They went)
