PTE Listening: Highlight Correct Summary

PTE Listening: Highlight Correct Summary

Task Introduction

In this task, you listen to a short academic recording (played once), then read several summary paragraphs and select the one that best captures the main idea of the recording. It tests both listening comprehension and reading speed, as you must quickly evaluate full paragraphs against what you heard.

Feature

Details

Number of Questions

1–2 per exam (some sources indicate 2–3)

Recording Length

Approximately 30–90 seconds

Time to Answer

No separate timer; within the overall Listening section. Aim to finish each question within 90 seconds after the audio ends

Scoring

1 point for correct, 0 for incorrect; no negative marking

Skills Assessed

Listening and Reading

Score Contribution

Approximately 5% of Listening score and 2% of Reading score

Key Strategy: Do not read the options while the audio is playing—there is too much text and it will distract you. Take notes on the main point and key supporting details, then read the options. Eliminate choices that contradict the recording or focus only on a minor detail. The correct answer usually captures the central argument plus at least one supporting reason.

Sample Set 1: Renewable Energy Storage

Audio Script (Approx. 60 words):

"Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are essential for reducing carbon emissions, but they are intermittent—the sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow. This creates a major challenge for energy grids. Scientists are developing large-scale battery storage and exploring hydrogen as a way to store excess energy. Without significant investment in storage technology, renewable energy cannot fully replace fossil fuels."

Question: Select the summary that best matches the recording.

A) Renewable energy is unreliable and therefore cannot replace fossil fuels under any circumstances.
B) Because solar and wind power are intermittent, energy storage technologies like batteries and hydrogen are critical for a full transition away from fossil fuels.
C) Battery prices have fallen so dramatically that the storage problem for renewable energy has already been solved.
D) Nuclear power is the only viable low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels because renewables are too inconsistent.

Answer: B

Sample Set 2: Antibiotic Resistance

Audio Script (Approx. 65 words):

"Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health today. The problem arises from overuse of antibiotics in both human medicine and agriculture. When bacteria are exposed to antibiotics repeatedly, they evolve to survive the treatment. This means common infections could become deadly again. Addressing this requires coordinated action: doctors must prescribe more carefully, farmers must reduce routine antibiotic use, and new drugs must be developed."

Question: Select the summary that best matches the recording.

A) Antibiotics should be banned entirely in agriculture because farming alone is responsible for resistant bacteria.
B) Resistant bacteria only emerge when patients fail to finish their prescribed antibiotic courses.
C) Antibiotic resistance is caused by overuse in medicine and farming, poses a serious global health threat, and requires coordinated action across sectors.
D) The development of new antibiotics is progressing quickly and will soon solve the resistance problem.

Answer: C

Sample Set 3: The Bystander Effect

Audio Script (Approx. 70 words):

"The bystander effect describes a troubling phenomenon: the more people present in an emergency, the less likely any one person is to help. Research shows this happens for two main reasons. First, responsibility is diffused—everyone assumes someone else will act. Second, people look to others for cues; if everyone appears calm, individuals interpret the situation as not being an emergency. This is not a lack of compassion, but a failure of social interpretation."

Question: Select the summary that best matches the recording.

A) The media correctly identifies that urban indifference and a lack of empathy are the primary reasons people fail to assist in emergencies.
B) Inaction in groups is typically caused by the diffusion of responsibility and misinterpreting others' calm behavior as a sign of safety, rather than apathy.
C) Individuals are less likely to help when they are alone because they fear misinterpreting the situation.
D) The bystander effect occurs because people in crowds prefer to wait for authorities to arrive.

Answer: B

Sample Set 4: Early Pacific Maps

Audio Script (Approx. 55 words):

"Early maps of the Pacific Ocean were not created by European sailors alone. They combined islanders' detailed knowledge of currents and islands with sailors' measurements. Many errors in these maps came not from the islanders' knowledge, but from translation problems—misunderstandings between languages. This shows how indigenous knowledge contributed significantly to early cartography."

Question: Select the summary that best matches the recording.

A) Early Pacific maps were inaccurate because islanders gave poor directions to European sailors.
B) Early Pacific maps combined local knowledge with sailors' measurements, and many mistakes resulted from translation rather than from the islanders' knowledge.
C) Sailors mapped the Pacific entirely without help from islanders, relying only on their own measurements.
D) Indigenous knowledge was considered unimportant by European mapmakers and was therefore excluded.

Answer: B

Sample Set 5: Online Education

Audio Script (Approx. 60 words):

"Online education has transformed learning for millions of students worldwide. It offers flexibility and accessibility, particularly for working professionals who cannot attend traditional classes. However, some educators argue that online learning cannot fully replace classroom interaction and hands-on experiences. The debate continues about whether digital platforms can deliver the same depth of learning as face-to-face instruction."

Question: Select the summary that best matches the recording.

A) Online education provides flexibility and accessibility, but some educators believe it cannot fully replace classroom interaction and practical experiences.
B) Online education has completely replaced classroom teaching in all countries and at all levels.
C) Working professionals are unable to benefit from online education systems because of technical barriers.
D) Educators unanimously agree that online learning is superior to face-to-face learning in every situation.

Answer: A

Reminder: The correct summary captures the speaker's main argument and at least one supporting reason. Eliminate options that contain false information, use absolute language not supported by the audio ("always," "never," "completely"), or focus on only a minor detail while missing the overall message.
