PTE Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks – Complete Guide

PTE Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks – Complete Guide

What Is This Question Type?

Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks (also called "Fill in the Blanks Dropdown") is a Reading section task where you see a passage of academic text with several blanks. Each blank has a dropdown menu with 4–5 word options, and you must select the one word that best fits each blank grammatically, lexically, and contextually.

Critical distinction: There are two similar tasks in PTE. This guide covers the dropdown version (Reading & Writing FIB), which is different from the drag-and-drop version (Reading FIB). Don't confuse them.

Number of Questions & Time

Number in Exam

5–6 questions

Passage Length

Approximately 300 words

Blank Count

Typically 4–6 blanks per passage

Scoring Rules

Aspect

Details

Points per blank

1 point for each correct answer

Negative marking

None – incorrect answers simply earn 0 for that blank

Score contribution

Reading: 25% (highest-weighted Reading task); also contributes to Writing

Key implication: This is the single most important Reading task. Every correct blank adds points to both Reading AND Writing scores. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so always make a selection.

Useful Tips & Strategies

The 3-Step System for Every Blank

Step 1: Read the Full Passage First

Spend 30–60 seconds reading the entire passage to understand the topic, tone, and direction of the argument. Blanks in context are much easier than blanks in isolation. When you know what the passage is about, the right word often becomes obvious.

Step 2: Identify the Part of Speech Before Looking at Options

Before opening the dropdown, ask: "What type of word goes here?"

  • Is it a noun? (subject or object)
  • Is it a verb? (the action in the clause)
  • Is it an adjective? (describing a noun)
  • Is it an adverb? (modifying a verb or adjective)

Many dropdown options include words from different word families (e.g., "define," "definition," "definitive," "definitively"). Knowing what part of speech you need instantly eliminates 2–3 of the 4–5 options.

Step 3: Use Collocations and Context

Certain words always appear together in English. These are called collocations and they're one of the most reliable ways to spot the right answer:

  • "make a decision" (not "do a decision")
  • "raise a concern" (not "lift a concern")
  • "heavily influenced" (not "greatly influenced")
  • "gain access to"
  • "play a role in"
  • "result in"

If two options seem grammatically identical, check which one collocates with the surrounding words.

Additional Strategies

4. Look at Both Sides of the Blank

Don't just look at the word before the blank. Look at the word after it too. Some words require specific prepositions or grammatical structures that follow them. Something might look correct on the left side but fail completely on the right.

5. Check Subject-Verb Agreement

One common trick: a blank is a verb, and the options look similar—but only one agrees with the subject.

6. Never Leave a Blank Empty

Since there is no negative marking, always make a selection. Even a guess has value.

How to Find Answers from the Passage

Step-by-Step Method

Step

Action

1

Skim the full passage – Understand the general topic and tone before touching any blank

2

Identify the grammatical requirement – What part of speech is needed in each blank?

3

Eliminate impossible options – Remove any words that are grammatically wrong (wrong tense, wrong word class, wrong preposition)

4

Check collocations – Which option naturally pairs with the words immediately around it?

5

Verify meaning in context – Does the word make logical sense given the passage's overall argument?

6

Select and move on – Don't second-guess. Trust your analysis and proceed to the next blank

Common Distractor Patterns

Trap Type

How to Spot It

Wrong word form

Options include different parts of speech (noun/verb/adjective) – eliminate those that don't fit grammatically

Collocation trap

Two options are grammatically correct but only one collocates naturally with surrounding words

Meaning trap

Word fits grammatically but doesn't fit the passage's logical flow or tone

Similar-sounding trap

Words that sound alike but have different meanings (e.g., "affect" vs "effect")

Tense trap

Options with different verb tenses – check time markers in the sentence
