PTE Reading: Fill in the Blanks (Drag and Drop) – Complete Guide

PTE Reading: Fill in the Blanks (Drag and Drop) – Complete Guide

What Is This Question Type?

Reading: Fill in the Blanks (Drag and Drop) is a Reading section task where you see a short passage of up to 80 words with several blanks. Below the passage is a blue word bank containing more words than there are blanks. You must drag the correct word from the bank into each gap.

Critical distinction: There are two "Fill in the Blanks" tasks in PTE. This guide covers the Drag and Drop version (Reading only). The other version uses dropdown menus (Reading & Writing). Don't confuse them.

Key implication: Since there is no penalty for wrong answers, always fill every blank, even if you must guess. Never leave a gap empty.

Useful Tips & Strategies

The 4-Step System for Every Blank

Step 1: Read the Full Passage First (30–45 seconds)

Before dragging anything, read the entire passage to understand the topic and how ideas connect. The right word for each blank depends on the meaning of the sentence around it. A quick full read makes every blank easier to fill correctly.

Step 2: Identify the Part of Speech Before Looking at the Word Bank

Before opening the word bank, ask: "What type of word goes here?"

  • Is it a noun? (subject or object)
  • Is it a verb? (the action in the clause)
  • Is it an adjective? (describing a noun)
  • Is it an adverb? (modifying a verb or adjective)

Many word banks include words from different word families (e.g., "define," "definition," "definitive"). Knowing what part of speech you need instantly eliminates 2–3 options.

Step 3: Use Collocations and Context

Certain words always appear together in English. These are called collocations and they're one of the most reliable ways to spot the right answer:

  • "make a decision" (not "do a decision")
  • "restore energy" (not "repair energy")
  • "profound consequences"
  • "keen interest"
  • "ten times the cost" (not "ten times the expense")

If two options seem grammatically identical, check which one collocates naturally with the surrounding words.

Step 4: Work Through Easy Blanks First

Don't spend 3 minutes on one uncertain blank while 4 easy blanks remain. Place the words you're confident about first. Each correctly placed word removes options from the pool and constrains the remaining blanks. Save the two hardest blanks for last—the distractors will be more obvious once only a few chips remain.

Additional Strategies

5. Look at Both Sides of the Blank

Don't just look at the word before the blank. Look at the word after it too. Some words require specific prepositions or grammatical structures that follow them. Something might look correct on the left side but fail completely on the right.

6. Check Grammar Rules

  • After "crucial to" → need a verb (e.g., "prioritize")
  • After "profound" → need a noun (e.g., "consequences")
  • After "has/have/had" → need a past participle (V3)
  • After "an" → the answer must start with a vowel sound
  • Between article + noun → likely an adjective

7. Use the Drag-Bank UI to Your Advantage

The drag-bank UI lets you drag chips back to the pool, so don't over-commit on your first pass. You can also drag words between blanks if you change your mind.

How to Find Answers from the Passage

Step-by-Step Method

Step

Action

1

Skim the full passage – Understand the general topic and tone before touching any blank

2

Identify the grammatical requirement – What part of speech is needed in each blank?

3

Eliminate impossible options – Remove any words that are grammatically wrong (wrong tense, wrong word class)

4

Check collocations – Which option naturally pairs with the words immediately around it?

5

Verify meaning in context – Does the word make logical sense given the passage's overall argument?

6

Select and move on – Don't second-guess. Trust your analysis and proceed

Common Distractor Patterns

Trap Type

How to Spot It

Wrong word form

Options include different parts of speech (noun/verb/adjective) – eliminate those that don't fit grammatically

Collocation trap

Two options are grammatically correct but only one collocates naturally with surrounding words

Meaning trap

Word fits grammatically but doesn't fit the passage's logical flow or tone

Similar-sounding trap

Words that sound alike but have different meanings

Tense trap

Options with different verb tenses – check time markers in the sentence

Same word reused

A word already used in the passage may appear in the bank as a distractor (e.g., "height" already used in the sentence)

Sample Passages with Questions & Answers

Each sample includes a passage with blanks, a word bank, the correct answer in random order (like D, B, A), and detailed reasoning.

Sample 1: Sleep and Brain Function

Passage:

When individuals do not get adequate rest, their ability to concentrate and process information is significantly (1). To ensure the brain functions efficiently, it is crucial to (2) a consistent sleep schedule. Consequently, neglecting sleep can have profound (3)______ on overall well-being. Experts recommend that adults aim for between seven and nine hours of quality sleep each night to fully (4)______ their energy levels.

Word Bank:

compromised, ignore, prioritize, maintained, consequences, restore, deplete, enhanced, origins

Correct Answers: 1compromised, 2prioritize, 3consequences, 4restore

Reasoning:

  • Blank 1: D (compromised) = Grammar + Meaning → The blank follows "is significantly" and needs a past participle describing the weakened state. "Compromised" means weakened or damaged. "Maintained" and "enhanced" are positive and contradict the negative context.
  • Blank 2: B (prioritize) = Grammar → After "crucial to" (infinitive marker), a base verb is needed. "Prioritize" fits grammatically. "Ignore" is negative and contradicts the recommendation.
  • Blank 3: A (consequences) = Grammar + Collocation → After "profound" (adjective), a noun is needed. "Profound consequences" is a standard collocation. "Origins" does not collocate with "profound".
  • Blank 4: C (restore) = Collocation → "Restore energy levels" is a standard phrase. "Deplete" means the opposite (to use up), and "ignore" does not collocate with "energy levels".

Sample 2: Shakespeare's Legacy

Passage:

Shakespeare is often considered the greatest writer in the English language. His plays and sonnets have been (1)______ for centuries. Despite being written hundreds of years ago, his works remain (2)______ today due to their exploration of universal themes like love, power, and jealousy.

Word Bank:

relevant, criticized, admired, ignored

Correct Answers: 1admired, 2- relevant

Reasoning:

  • Blank 1: C (admired) = Grammar + Meaning → The blank follows "have been" and needs a past participle. "Admired" fits the positive context of Shakespeare's reputation. "Criticized" and "ignored" contradict the celebratory tone.
  • Blank 2: A (relevant) = Grammar + Meaning → The blank follows "remain" and needs an adjective. "Relevant" fits the idea that his works still matter. "Criticized" and "ignored" are negative and contradict the passage's argument.

Sample 3: Tree Canopy Measurement

Passage:

Cities measure tree canopy from above, which means a street of mature planes can (1)______ higher cover than a park of the same footprint. Aerial imagery is cheap and repeatable but systematically (2)______ narrow street trees whose crowns are obscured by buildings. Lidar avoids this because it captures height and therefore (3), at ten times the (4).

Word Bank:

register, volume, undercounts, cost, overstates, expense, registration, height

Correct Answers: 1register, 2undercounts, 3volume, 4cost

Reasoning:

  • Blank 1: A (register) = Grammar → After "can" (modal verb), a base verb is needed. "Register" is the correct base form. "Registration" is a noun and does not fit grammatically.
  • Blank 2: B (undercounts) = Meaning → The sentence describes a systematic flaw in aerial imagery. "Undercounts" means fails to count everything, fitting the idea that narrow street trees are missed. "Overstates" is grammatically correct but contradicts the meaning.
  • Blank 3: C (volume) = Meaning → Lidar captures height and therefore "volume" (three-dimensional space). "Height" is already used in the sentence and is not the logical complement to "height".
  • Blank 4: D (cost) = Collocation → "Ten times the cost" is a fixed phrase. "Ten times the expense" is not a standard collocation, even though both words have similar meanings.

Sample 4: Professional Astronomers

Passage:

Professional astronomers, (1)______ their amateur counterparts, have no particular interest in the aesthetic quality of their photographs. What (2)______ to them is the contribution their images can (3)______ to research, and to the (4)______ of data scientists in their field (5)______ for research purposes.

Word Bank:

make, equipped, unlike, matters, use, collection, put, concerns

Correct Answers: 1 unlike, 2matters, 3make, 4collection, 5use

Reasoning:

  • Blank 1: C (unlike) = Grammar + Meaning → The blank introduces a contrast between professional astronomers and amateurs. "Unlike" is the correct preposition for comparison. "Equipped" does not fit grammatically or semantically.
  • Blank 2: B (matters) = Grammar + Meaning → The blank is the main verb of the clause "What ___ to them." "Matters" means is important. "Concerns" could work but "What concerns to them" is grammatically awkward.
  • Blank 3: A (make) = Collocation → "Make a contribution" is the standard phrase. "Put a contribution" and "use a contribution" are not standard collocations.
  • Blank 4: D (collection) = Meaning → "Collection of data" is a standard academic phrase. "Use of data" could work but "collection of data scientists" is the intended meaning (the body of data that scientists collect).
  • Blank 5: E (use) = Grammar + Meaning → The blank follows "field" and precedes "for research purposes." "Use for research purposes" is the standard phrase. The word bank contains "use" as both noun and verb—here it fits as the noun referring to the data scientists' use of the images.

Sample 5: University Science Funding

Passage:

The closures have been blamed on a (1)______ in student applications, but money is a (2): chemistry degrees are expensive to provide — compared with English, for example — and some scientists say that the way the government concentrates research (3) on a small number of top departments, such as Bristol, increases the (4)______.

Word Bank:

profit, risk, motivate, fall, rise, funding, factor

Correct Answers: 1 fall, 2factor, 3funding, 4risk

Reasoning:

  • Blank 1: D (fall) = Meaning → The sentence describes a reason for closures. "Fall in student applications" means a decrease, which explains the closures. "Rise" would contradict the logic (more students = fewer closures).
  • Blank 2: A (factor) = Collocation → "Money is a factor" is a standard phrase meaning money is an important consideration. "Profit" does not fit the academic context.
  • Blank 3: C (funding) = Collocation → "Research funding" is the standard phrase for money allocated to research. "Profit" and "risk" do not collocate with "research" in this context.
  • Blank 4: B (risk) = Meaning → Concentrating funding on a few departments "increases the risk" (of closures at other departments). "Fall" and "rise" are already used and do not fit the grammatical structure.
