30 Subject-Verb Agreement Rules


Rule 1: Singular subject → Singular verb

नेपाली: Singular subject भएमा singular verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

He works hard.
She is a teacher.
Ram plays football.


Rule 2: Plural subject → Plural verb

नेपाली: Plural subject भएमा plural verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

They work hard.
The boys are playing.
Ram and Hari are friends.


Rule 3: Two or more subjects joined by "and" → Plural verb

नेपाली: दुई वा दुईभन्दा बढी subjects लाई and ले जोड्दा सामान्यतया plural verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

Ram and Hari are friends.
The teacher and the student are talking.
My brother and sister live in Kathmandu.


Rule 4: Two singular subjects joined by "and" referring to one person or thing → Singular verb

नेपाली: And ले दुई शब्दलाई जोडेको भए पनि एउटै व्यक्ति वा एउटै वस्तु जनाउँदा singular verb प्रयोग हुन्छ।

Example:

The owner and manager is here.
The poet and writer is famous.
Bread and butter is my usual breakfast.


Rule 5: Subjects joined by "or" → Verb agrees with the nearer subject

नेपाली: Or ले दुई subjects जोड्दा verb नजिकको subject अनुसार हुन्छ।

Example:

Ram or his friends are coming.
Ram or his brother is coming.
The teachers or the principal is responsible.


Rule 6: Subjects joined by "nor" → Verb agrees with the nearer subject

नेपाली: Nor ले दुई subjects जोड्दा verb नजिकको subject अनुसार हुन्छ।

Example:

Neither Ram nor his friends are ready.
Neither the students nor the teacher is absent.
Neither the teacher nor the students are ready.


Rule 7: "Either...or" → Verb agrees with the nearer subject

नेपाली: Either...or मा verb नजिकको subject अनुसार हुन्छ।

Example:

Either Ram or Hari is coming.
Either Ram or his friends are coming.
Either the students or the teacher is responsible.


Rule 8: "Neither...nor" → Verb agrees with the nearer subject

नेपाली: Neither...nor मा verb नजिकको subject अनुसार हुन्छ।

Example:

Neither Ram nor Hari is present.
Neither Ram nor his friends are coming.
Neither the teacher nor the students are ready.


Rule 9: "Not only...but also" → Verb agrees with the nearer subject

नेपाली: Not only...but also मा verb नजिकको subject अनुसार हुन्छ।

Example:

Not only Ram but also Hari is coming.
Not only Ram but also his friends are coming.
Not only the students but also the teacher is responsible.


Rule 10: Each + singular noun → Singular verb

नेपाली: Each पछि singular noun आएमा singular verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

Each student has a book.
Each boy is ready.
Each teacher works hard.


Rule 11: Every + singular noun → Singular verb

नेपाली: Every पछि singular noun आएमा singular verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

Every student is important.
Every boy has a book.
Every teacher knows the rule.


Rule 12: Each of + plural noun → Singular verb

नेपाली: Each of पछि plural noun आए पनि singular verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

Each of the students is ready.
Each of the boys has a book.
Each of the teachers was present.


Rule 13: Every one of + plural noun → Singular verb

नेपाली: Every one of पछि plural noun आए पनि singular verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

Every one of the students is ready.
Every one of the boys has a pen.
Every one of the teachers was present.


Rule 14: Everyone / Everybody → Singular verb

नेपाली: Everyone / Everybody ले धेरै मानिसलाई जनाए पनि grammar मा singular subject मानिन्छ।

Example:

Everyone is happy.
Everybody has a responsibility.
Everyone wants to succeed.


Rule 15: Someone / Somebody → Singular verb

नेपाली: Someone / Somebody पछि singular verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

Someone is waiting outside.
Somebody has taken my book.
Someone wants to speak to you.


Rule 16: Anyone / Anybody → Singular verb

नेपाली: Anyone / Anybody लाई singular subject मानिन्छ।

Example:

Anyone can learn English.
Anybody is welcome here.
Anyone who works hard can succeed.


Rule 17: No one / Nobody → Singular verb

नेपाली: No one / Nobody पछि singular verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

No one is perfect.
Nobody knows the answer.
Nobody has arrived yet.


Rule 18: Something / Anything / Nothing → Singular verb

नेपाली: Something / Anything / Nothing लाई singular subject मानिन्छ।

Example:

Something is wrong.
Anything is possible.
Nothing has changed.


Rule 19: "One of + plural noun" → Singular verb

नेपाली: One of + plural noun पछि singular verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

One of the students is absent.
One of my friends lives in Pokhara.
One of the books is missing.


Rule 20: "Either / Neither" used alone → Singular verb

नेपाली: Either / Neither एक्लै subject का रूपमा प्रयोग हुँदा singular verb लिन्छ।

Example:

Either is acceptable.
Neither is correct.
Either of them is suitable.
Neither of the answers is correct.


Rule 21: Indefinite pronouns (everyone, somebody, nobody, each, either, neither) → Singular verb

नेपाली: Indefinite pronoun जस्तै everyone, somebody, nobody, each, either, neither पछि singular verb आउँछ।

Example:

Everyone has finished the work.
Somebody is waiting for you.
Neither of the answers is correct.


Rule 22: Indefinite pronouns (both, few, many, several) → Plural verb

नेपाली: Both, few, many, several जस्ता indefinite pronoun पछि plural verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

Both are guilty.
Few were present at the meeting.
Several have already left.


Rule 23: "All, Some, None, Most" → Depends on the noun

नेपाली: All, some, none, most ले जनाउने noun अनुसार verb singular वा plural हुन्छ।

Example:

All of the milk is spoiled.
All of the boys are here.
Some of the information was useful.
Some of the students were absent.


Rule 24: "Either...or" and "Neither...nor" → Verb agrees with the nearer subject

नेपाली: Either...or र Neither...nor मा verb नजिकको subject अनुसार हुन्छ।

Example:

Either Ram or his friends are coming.
Neither the teacher nor the students were present.
Either the students or the teacher is responsible.


Rule 25: "Not only...but also" → Verb agrees with the nearer subject

नेपाली: Not only...but also मा पनि verb नजिकको subject अनुसार हुन्छ।

Example:

Not only the manager but also the workers are on strike.
Not only the workers but also the manager is on strike.
Not only Ram but also his friends are invited.


Rule 26: Collective nouns → Singular when acting as one unit

नेपाली: Team, family, committee, jury, government जस्ता collective noun ले एउटै इकाई जनाउँदा singular verb आउँछ।

Example:

The team has won the match.
The committee has made its decision.
The family is going on vacation.


Rule 27: Collective nouns → Plural when members act individually

नेपाली: Collective noun का सदस्यहरू छुट्टाछुट्टै कार्य गर्दा plural verb प्रयोग गरिन्छ।

Example:

The team are arguing among themselves.
The jury were divided in their opinions.
The committee are unable to agree.


Rule 28: "A number of" → Plural verb; "The number of" → Singular verb

नेपाली: A number of पछि plural verb, तर The number of पछि singular verb आउँछ।

Example:

A number of students are absent.
The number of students is increasing.
A number of books were missing.
The number of books was surprising.


Rule 29: "Majority / Minority" → Singular or plural depending on meaning

नेपाली: Majority / Minority ले समूहलाई एउटै इकाई मानेमा singular, व्यक्तिहरूलाई जनाएमा plural verb प्रयोग हुन्छ।

Example:

The majority has decided.
The majority of the students have passed.
The minority was ignored.
The minority of voters are unhappy.


Rule 30: "There is / There are" → Verb agrees with the real subject

नेपाली: There is / There are मा there वास्तविक subject होइन; पछाडि आउने वास्तविक subject अनुसार verb प्रयोग हुन्छ।

Example:

There is a pen on the desk.
There are two books on the desk.
There is a pen and two books on the desk.
There are two books and a pen on the desk.
