PTE Reorder Paragraphs: Rules & Tips

In PTE Academic, the Reorder Paragraphs task tests your ability to understand logical flow in a passage. You will get sentences of a paragraph shuffled, and your job is to arrange them in a coherent, logical order.

Key Rules and Strategies

  1. Look for the Introduction or Topic Sentence
    • Usually, the first sentence introduces the main idea.
    • Words like “Today, many people…”, “Climate change is…”, “In recent years…” often signal the start.
  2. Identify Logical Connections
    • Check pronouns, conjunctions, and linking words:
      • Pronouns like he, she, it, they refer back to previous sentences.
      • Connectors: however, therefore, in addition, meanwhile, as a result.
    • These help you find the order.
  3. Look for Chronological or Sequential Cues
    • Some passages follow time or process order: first → next → finally.
    • Words like then, afterwards, finally, initially indicate sequence.
  4. Check Cause & Effect Relationships
    • Some sentences explain a reason or result.
    • Words like because, as a result, therefore, consequently help.
  5. Look for Repetition or Synonyms
    • Some sentences repeat ideas in different words. These often follow each other.
  6. The Ending Sentence
    • Usually summarizes or concludes the idea.
    • Look for sentences that wrap up or provide a final thought.

Example 1

Sentences:
A. Many people enjoy gardening as a relaxing hobby.
B. Studies show that spending time in green spaces reduces stress.
C. It can also improve physical health by encouraging exercise.

Answer:
A → B → C
Explanation: Starts with general idea → gives evidence → adds further benefit.


Example 2

Sentences:
A. Global warming has many consequences for the environment.
B. For example, glaciers are melting at an alarming rate.
C. These effects threaten both wildlife and human populations.

Answer:
A → B → C
Explanation: Introduces topic → gives example → explains effect.


Example 3

Sentences:
A. The invention of the internet changed communication.
B. People can now send emails and messages instantly.
C. This revolution also impacted business and education.
D. Before that, letters and telegraphs were the main tools.

Answer:
D → A → B → C
Explanation: Chronological order: past → invention → immediate effect → broader effect.


Example 4

Sentences:
A. Eating healthy foods is essential for long-term health.
B. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins provide vital nutrients.
C. A balanced diet can prevent diseases like diabetes and heart problems.

Answer:
A → B → C
Explanation: General statement → specifics → result/benefit.

Sentences:

Answer:
B → A → C
Explanation: Problem → solution → action/investment.


Tips for PTE Reorder Paragraphs:

  • Always find the first sentence and the last sentence first.
  • Identify cause-effect, sequence, or contrast.
  • Watch for linking words like however, therefore, because, meanwhile.
  • Don’t overthink—look for natural logical flow.
