Day 16 Use of of should, should have, and should have + verb 3 (past participle)

 Day 16

A detailed explanation of should, should have, and should have + verb 3 (past participle), with examples in English and Nepali (Romanized Nepali letters).

1. Should (Present / Future)

Use: To give advice, opinions, or say what is the right thing to do now or in the future.

Nepali meaning: "पर्छ" (parcha), "उचित हुन्छ" (uchit huncha)

Situation

English Example

Nepali Example (Romanized)

Giving advice

You should eat healthy food.

तिमीले स्वस्थ खाना खानुपर्छ। (Timile swastha khana khanuparcha.)

Recommendation

You should see that movie.

तिमीले त्यो चलचित्र हेर्नुपर्छ। (Timile tyo chalchitra hernuparcha.)

Opinion (right thing)

He should apologize for his mistake.

उसले आफ्नो गल्तीको लागि माफी माग्नुपर्छ। (Usle aafno galtiko lagi mafi magnuparcha.)

Expectation

The bus should arrive soon.

बस चाँडै आउनुपर्छ। (Bus chadai aaunuparcha.)

2. Should Have + Verb 3 (Past Participle)

Use: To talk about past mistakes, regrets, or things that were the right thing to do but did not happen.

Nepali meaning: "भएको हुनुपर्थ्यो" (bhaeko hunuparthyo) / "गर्नुपर्थ्यो तर गरिएन"

Situation

English Example

Nepali Example (Romanized)

Regret / Mistake

I should have studied harder for the exam.

मैले परीक्षाको लागि राम्रोसँग पढेको हुनुपर्थ्यो। (Maile parikshako lagi ramrosanga padeko hunuparthyo.)

Criticism (past)

You should have called me.

तिमीले मलाई फोन गरेको हुनुपर्थ्यो। (Timile malai phone gareko hunuparthyo.)

Missed opportunity

She should have taken that job.

उसले त्यो जागिर लिएको हुनुपर्थ्यो। (Usle tyo jagir lieko hunuparthyo.)

Unfulfilled expectation

They should have arrived by now. (but they didn't)

उनीहरू अहिलेसम्म आइपुगेको हुनुपर्थ्यो। (Uniharu ahilesamma aaipugeko hunuparthyo.)

3. Should + Have (as a simple present + infinitive) — Note for clarity

Sometimes "should have" is not about the past, but about the present having something. But this is less common.

Example:
You should have a passport. (
तिमीसँग पासपोर्ट हुनुपर्छ।)

👉 Here, "have" means "to possess" (present), not a past action. This is NOT "should have + verb 3".

To avoid confusion, remember:

Should have + noun = present possession

You should have patience.
(
तिमीलाई धैर्य हुनुपर्छ।)

Should have + verb 3 = past regret

You should have told me.
(
तिमीले मलाई भनेको हुनुपर्थ्यो।)
