PTE Describe Image - Complete Guide updated

PTE Describe Image - Complete Guide (English & Nepali)

What is Describe Image?

English:

Describe Image is a speaking task in the PTE exam where you see an image on the screen and you have to describe it in detail within 40 seconds. This task tests your ability to:

  • Observe and analyze visual information
  • Organize your thoughts quickly
  • Speak fluently with correct pronunciation
  • Use appropriate vocabulary and grammar

Describe Image is not just about listing numbers; the response should identify the main features, comparisons/trends, and an overall conclusion.

ЁЯУК PTE Describe Image — Task Format & Timing

  • Number of questions: Usually 3–4 Describe Image tasks
  • Preparation time: 25 seconds
  • Speaking time: 30–40 seconds
  • Main goal: Describe the most important information shown in the image clearly and fluently.

ЁЯОп How Describe Image Is Scored

Criterion

Score

What it measures

Content

0–5

How accurately and meaningfully you describe the image

Oral Fluency

0–5

Smoothness, rhythm, speed, and absence of unnecessary pauses

Pronunciation

0–5

Clarity, intelligibility, word stress, and intonation

⭐ Content: The Most Important Point

A high-content response should not simply list figures.

Instead, you should:

1.      Introduce the image — say what it shows.

2.      Identify the main feature — the highest, lowest, biggest, smallest, or most noticeable point.

3.      Make comparisons — compare important categories or figures.

4.      Describe trends — mention increases, decreases, fluctuations, or stability where relevant.

5.      Give an overall conclusion — summarize the most significant information.

For example, instead of saying:

“A is 20, B is 40, C is 60, and D is 80.”

Say:

“The chart shows a clear upward trend, with D recording the highest figure at 80, while A has the lowest at 20. Overall, the figures increase steadily from A to D.”

This demonstrates relationships and comparisons, rather than merely reading data.

ЁЯЧг️ A Simple 30–40 Second Structure

1. Introduction — 5 seconds

“The given image is a bar chart showing…”

2. Main feature — 8 seconds

“The most noticeable feature is that…”

3. Key details/comparisons — 15–20 seconds

“In comparison, … while … On the other hand, …”

4. Conclusion — 5 seconds

“Overall, the chart indicates that…”

ЁЯФС 25-Second Preparation Strategy

When the image appears, quickly identify:

WHAT → HIGHEST → LOWEST → COMPARISON/TREND → CONCLUSION

You do not need to describe every number or every part of the image. Select the information that best represents the visual and connect the points logically.

ЁЯПЖ Golden Rule

Describe + Compare + Interpret + Conclude

This is much stronger than:

Describe + Describe + Describe

For PTE, aim for a response that is clear, fluent, structured, and easy to understand, rather than trying to speak extremely fast or include every single detail.
