Use of Shall and Should

1. "Shall" – Use and Meaning

 A. Future (Formal / Legal / British English)

Used mostly with "I" or "We" to express future actions or intentions (more formal than “will”).

         i.            I shall return soon.
चाँडै फर्किनेछु।

        ii.            We shall overcome.
हामी जित्नेछौं।

 B. Offers and Suggestions

         i.            Shall I open the window? (Offer)
झ्याल खोलूँ?

        ii.            Shall we go for a walk? (Suggestion)
हामी हिँड्न जाऔं?

C. Rules, Commands (formal/legal language)

         i.            The accused shall remain in custody.
अभियुक्त हिरासतमा रहनेछ।


2. "Should" – Use and Meaning

A. Advice / Recommendation

         i.            You should eat healthy food.
तिमीले स्वस्थ खाना खानुपर्छ।

        ii.            He should study harder.
उसले अझ कडा मेहनत गर्नुपर्छ।

B. Obligation / Duty (less strong than 'must')

         i.            You should respect your parents.
तिमीले आफ्ना आमाबुबाको सम्मान गर्नुपर्छ।

C. Expectation / Probability

         i.            They should be here by now.
उनीहरू अहिले सम्म आइपुग्नु पर्थ्यो।

        ii.            It should take about an hour.
यसमा करिब एक घण्टा लाग्नुपर्छ।

D. Conditional Sentences

         i.            If you should need help, just call me.
यदि तिमीलाई सहयोग चाहियो भने, मलाई फोन गर।
